Title: Director of Research

Reports to: Vice President, Government Relations

Position Overview

The Director of Research will provide in-depth, original research and data analysis to support the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce's public policy functions. The Director will use a wide range of data, research, and statistics related to the region's economy, public policy environment, and emerging trends in employment and business to help evaluate how current and proposed public policies impact living and working in the Commonwealth. In partnership with the Vice President of Government Relations, the Director's work will help inform the Chamber's policy positions and evaluate the effectiveness of public programs and institutions. A successful applicant will have a background in research and be a driven team player who is a critical thinker, analytical, creative, and intellectually curious.

Responsibilities

  • Manage research projects that support and inform the Chamber's policy agenda with limited guidance. Draft detail-oriented research reports and other publications.
  • Conduct data-driven research to inform and support the Chamber's public policy efforts.
  • Contribute to developing compelling, persuasive, data-driven materials to support the Chamber's public policy positions. Anticipate and address responses and reactions.
  • Present work to internal and external audiences. Represent the Chamber at meetings with members, partners, and policymakers.
  • Manage two of the Chamber's leadership councils.
  • Complete ad hoc requests for research and data support.
  • Act as a leading, positive influence on Chamber culture.
  • Develop relationships with Chamber members, subject matter and policy experts, and other business associations.
  • Perform a small amount of general administrative, programming, and other duties as assigned.

Education/Qualifications

  • Ability to make decisions without supervision and understand when to elevate decisions.
  • Willing to meet a high standard for accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience with data analytics software such as Tableau or Microsoft BI.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex and emerging research and public policy areas.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and share information broadly with colleagues.
  • Advanced degree in data analytics, public policy, or similar field strongly preferred.
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in a public policy or analysis role, some of which must involve supporting and conducting public policy research.
  • Ability to manage relationships and projects with multiple internal and external constituencies
  • Ability to prioritize across potentially competing objectives and timelines
  • Strong business ethics and values
  • Experience reviewing state legislation and budgets, municipal ordinances, and agency regulations preferred.

Salary: Starts at $85,000

Physical Requirements

This is a sedentary job by nature but does require travel. Requires being able to sit at a desk and use a computer and phone for most of the day. When traveling, an employee must be mobile enough to get around events and assist with set up and break down including lifting 25lbs or more. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
