The Director of Public Policy with the Minnesota Farm Bureau (MFBF) will be responsible for leading the grassroots policy efforts of the organization on the national, state and local levels. This includes organizing and implementing all legislative and regulatory issue outreach, managing the department budget, and supervision of a public policy specialist. The director position will report to the MFBF Executive Director, and also receive guidance from the MFBF Board of Directors and grassroots membership. This is a permanent, full-time position based out of the MFBF offices in Eagan, Minnesota.


RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develop and implement an action plan to ensure Farm Bureau is effectively represented on state and national legislative and regulatory issues and with state legislators, Minnesota members of Congress, their staffs, state government administration and state agencies. 
  • Primary issue areas include: energy, environmental, farm policy, livestock, natural resources, taxes, and rulemaking/agency regulations.
  • Prepare regular updates on legislative and regulatory issues to Farm Bureau members, board of directors and staff.
  • Represent the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation at meetings with elected officials and staff, government personnel and other stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership for MFBF’s policy development process.
  • Provide staff assistance for state and federal Political Action Committee (PAC) activity.
  • Supervisory responsibilities include oversight of the public policy specialist.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the appropriate procedures for working with state legislature, Congress, Governor, state agencies and other entities in the implementation of Farm Bureau policies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Working knowledge of agriculture.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, public policy or a related field. 
  • Ability to understand new issues quickly and make wise decisions.
  • Ability to work under pressure, plan workload effectively and delegate.
  • Minimum five years’ work experience in agriculture or related field.
  • Ability to travel and maintain a flexible schedule.


COMPENSATION:

Salary range is between $80,000 – 95,000, based on experience and job qualifications.
