The Baltimore Banner is a nonprofit newsroom founded to bring high-quality local journalism to the Baltimore metro area. About the role:
The Baltimore Banner is seeking a skilled and dedicated reporter to cover business issues in the Baltimore area.
As the business reporter, you will be responsible for breaking news stories while consistently delivering impactful enterprise and accountability pieces. Your coverage will focus on major companies and industries in Maryland, including Under Armour, CFG Bank, the McCormick spice company and the Johns Hopkins Health System. You also will be writing frequently about economic development in the Baltimore region and the economy, with an eye toward localizing national trends.
Collaboration is a key aspect of this role. You will often work with data reporters to produce richly reported data-driven journalism, as well as with regional and government reporters, among others at The Banner. You will occasionally work with The Banner's news partners and must be comfortable making appearances on television and radio.
Responsibilities:
Break news stories related to the business beat
Produce compelling enterprise stories that highlight issues, trends, and hold public officials accountable
Collaborate with The Banner's engagement and data teams to engage the audience and distribute content across all platforms
Work in coordination with other Baltimore Banner editors, reporters, and staff to cover how business intersects with other topics
Think creatively about how to approach the beat and deliver stories in different digital formats
Job Requirements:
Minimum of five years of experience in journalism, preferably with a history of covering companies.
Strong writing skills and the ability to present complex topics in an understandable manner
Excellent news judgment and fact-checking skills
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Passion for news and content that resonates with readers
Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
Exceptional interpersonal skills
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as dictated by news demands
Excellent planning, organizational, and time management abilities
Familiarity with metrics, social media, and SEO to drive audience growth and digital subscriptions
Commitment to upholding journalistic values and ethics
