Base pay range

$30.00/hr - $40.00/hr

Background Investigator


Johns Hopkins University Public Safety is seeking highly motivated individuals to work as Background Investigators. The Background Investigators work in a team environment and report to the Public Safety Human Resources Office.


This position will be responsible for conducting in-depth background investigations of applicant's personal histories that are seeking employment with the Johns Hopkins Public Safety. It will be necessary to interview past employers, references, friends and other individuals who may provide intimate information regarding the applicant's suitability in performing the job responsibilities of his/her employment. The background investigator will be required to make personal, written, electronic, personal and phone contact with the public, State and municipal agencies and prior employers. The background investigator will be required to be/become proficient in the utilization of various law enforcement computer applications such as CJIS, NCIC.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Conducts investigations, which includes conducting interviews to obtain information concerning the applicants background, past working history, past education and addresses, criminal background to determine whether applicant meets guidelines for positions.

Examines various records and documents in order to ascertain relevant information.

Documents all information gathered.

Interprets and applies applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

Prepares various reports.

Reviews completed background interview documentation checking for inconsistencies, errors, omissions, falsifications and minimum requirements to ensure accuracy and completion

Conduct background investigations by interviewing employers, co-workers, neighbors, law enforcement officials, military personnel, members of the candidate’s family and personal references

Prepare detailed and complete interview statements for each person being interviewed in order to allow a reviewer to draw reasonable and logical conclusions about the prospective candidates

Prepare documentation for inclusion into a results of investigation package organizing all investigative material in accordance with established procedures

Prepares detailed summary of adverse information based upon objective analysis and evaluation of candidate’s background, and interviewee statements, as measured against requirement standards.

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree or the equivalent combination of education, professional training, or work experience

Minimum 3 years of background investigation experience; law enforcement experience preferred.
