Colby is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and has 32 intercollegiate sports that compete at the Division III level. The department also includes the campus recreation program and hosts a variety of club and intramural sports. More than one-third of Colby’s 2,200 students participate in intercollegiate sports and, in total, nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities in the department.
The College is home to a state-of-the-art athletics complex which is among the best Division III facilities in the country. The 350,000 square-foot athletics center includes an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College opened a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of three gleaming new competition and recreational fields that are also among the finest outdoor venues in Division III. The Colby College Department of Athletics and Recreation seeks an innovative and creative-thinking Assistant Director of competitive sports beginning September 1st, 2021. The Assistant Director of competitive sports is primarily responsible for leadership, supervision, and day to day operations of the competitive sports program which includes: Esports, intramural sports, and club sports for the community that will enrich the student experience by cultivating diverse, meaningful relationships and developing healthy lifestyle habits. Administer all aspects of the Intramural Sports program offered through Colby Recreation. Provide leadership and advising 30+ clubs including managing club practice and competition schedules. Travel and enforcement of risk management policies and procedures. The incumbent will assist with facility supervision and operation of the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center as it pertains to the Colby Recreation department. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to successfully work with a diverse campus population of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community organizations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for leading and directing a comprehensive intramural sports program including planning and scheduling intramural and recreational sports and special events. Recruit, hire, train and schedule student managers and sport officials. This will include managing payroll and evaluations for over 30 student employees. Manage intramural software system for program registration, scheduling and participant data. Responsible for all campus wide publicity for the intramural program including managing website, calendars, fliers, and social media. Develop and manage an intramural budget. Responsible for maintaining inventories for both the intramural program and making decisions regarding the acquisition of new equipment and supplies to support programs. Responsible for preparing the annual report for intramural programs.
Oversee Club Sports registration and ensure that all documentation is appropriately completed and filed. Provide leadership and advisement for 30+ Club Sports including managing club practice and competition schedules, travel, hiring of coaches, inventory and enforcement of risk management policies and procedures. Will assist Student Government Association (SGA) with budget and financial resources. Develop and advise the Club Sports Council and work closely with the organizations in the transition of leadership each year. Responsible for preparing the annual report for the Club Sports program. Will work closely with Campus Life and SGA on Club Sports budget allocations. Oversee the assignment of storage space for Club Sports.
Work in collaboration with Athletics to schedule and manage 350,000 sq. ft. facility (Olympic pool, ice rink, gymnasium, field house, 3 level fitness center, 2 fitness studios, erg room, climbing and bouldering wall and squash center) and 7 outdoor spaces/fields (football field/track, softball field, baseball field, soccer field, rugby field, recreation field, and tennis courts)
Manage all equipment purchased for the department of recreation
Develop programs that support the vision and mission of the Colby Recreation department to assist students, faculty and staff to discover, explore and live a healthy lifestyle
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Sport Management, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or related field
Three or more years of increasingly responsibility managing a comprehensive Intramural Sports and Club Sport Program
Must have current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or be able to obtain within two months of employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Sport Management, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or related field
Five or more years of increasingly responsibility managing a comprehensive Intramural Sports and Club Sport Program
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Recreation, who in turn is directly supervised by the vice president and director of athletics. This position has significant interactions with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other outside constituencies.

The position will be a full-time, fiscal year appointment, with frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year with those dates determined by the director of athletics.
