Earlier this week, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission overhauled the planning and payment process for regional electric transmission lines. The new regulations aim to modernize how electric companies plan for future power lines. These rules will encourage utilities to consider long-term needs, prioritize cost-effectiveness, and account for the wider advantages of a stronger grid.

The energy transition will require signficant build out of electric network infrastructure to accomodate projected demand growth, but we owe it to our customers to maximize the capacity and efficiency of the grid we've all invested in, LineVision's DLR and other technologies are helping us do just that. #energytransition #cleanenergy #innovation #climatech

DOE proposes ten “national interest” transmission corridors (my latest for PV Magazine USA) Eight of the ten transmission corridors proposed by the U.S. Department of Energy would facilitate transmission between grid regions; one would expand transmission within the Mid-Atlantic’s #PJM grid region; and one would expand transmission in the Northern Plains.

Here are a few risk mitigation strategies and community engagement tactics to consider for battery storage units: Fire Safety: Lithium-ion batteries, the dominant technology in battery storage systems, pose a potential fire risk. Strict adherence to fire safety codes, including proper ventilation, fire suppression systems, and thermal runaway mitigation strategies, can significantly reduce this risk. Environmental Impact: Battery production and disposal can have environmental consequences. Using responsibly sourced materials and implementing recycling programs can help minimize this impact. Community Engagement: Transparency and open communication with the community throughout the planning, construction, and operation of a battery storage unit are critical for building trust and addressing resident concerns. As we incorporate more renewable energy into New York's energy mix, we also much upgrade our grid to accommodate larger electricity loads. One way we're doing this is by installing Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology. DLR enables us to deliver more clean energy with greater efficiency by providing real-time data that our operators can use to maximize line capacity and safely move power to where it is needed most, especially during extreme weather. We recently deployed Line Vision’s DLR on four 115kV transmission lines in Western New York. This is the largest operationalization of an innovative line rating technology in the United States and the first in New York. As utilities think about increased electric demand as part of the clean energy transition, DLR is a gamechanger for ensuring that supply is moving where it is needed as efficiently as possible. National Grid is proud to work with companies that share our dedication to accelerating a stronger, smarter, and cleaner energy system. This project is an exciting step forward, and we look forward to building on this progress to develop the infrastructure necessary for a sustainable future.
