They aren’t often grouped together, but the latest data in the new Variety report “Social Video vs. SVOD: The Race to Replace TV” suggests they can be thought of as a series of historical shifts in U.S. audience viewing behavior. First, the cable business broke broadcast TV’s stranglehold in the 1980s. Thirty years later, Netflix led a field of successor streaming services that siphoned eyeballs at equally sizable scale from linear TV. And now even though streaming is hardly done in terms of its growth relative to broadcast and cable, there are signs of a paradigm shift already in motion: a third wave of fragmentation in which social video begins to eat into the market share of major streaming services. Data keeps mounting that video consumption on the big social platforms — primarily YouTube, TikTok and Instagram — is growing strongly, with users spending more time on these platforms each year. Discovery plan to use their new streaming joint-venture to boost impressions they have to sell to Madison Avenue during the industry’s annual “upfront” market, according to three people familiar with the matter. Each company will offer to use the audiences expected to watch the programs they contribute to the new business — and the national commercials that accompany them — to fill out advertiser schedules, these people say. The companies could also insert ads as needed in the (social) feeds if need be, one of these people suggested. Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney declined to provide comment on their plans. During the upfront, TV networks try to sell the bulk of their commercial inventory for their next cycle of programming. While many aspects of the new service remain unknown, revelation of the aforementioned plans suggests that advertising will play a role. Many streaming services show significantly fewer commercials than their linear-TV counterparts, but the new streaming outlet is expected to offer access to networks including ESPN, TNT, ABC, Fox and Fox Sports 1, all of which rely on commercials as a significant pillar of their finances. Big day in NFL media as the League prepares for Schedule Release tonight, while announcing Christmas Day games on Netflix and the NY Giants Offseason Hard Knocks. 🌟 Tentpole Watch: The NFL hasn’t yet christened Christmas Day as an official tentpole event on the League calendar like Thanksgiving, but increased attention on these games and awarding them to Netflix gives them a bit of a “special” status that suggests that could be coming. 📈 No Days Off: There was a time when Saturday was for College Football and Christmas Day was for the NBA. With Christmas being on a Wednesday this year, the teams playing that day will be scheduled to play on the Saturday the week prior. Earlier this week, NBC announced it would air a Saturday game on Dec 21 (in addition to SNF that weekend), going head-to-head with three College Football Playoff games. Add post-game water cooler chatter, researching/setting fantasy line-ups, etc, and the NFL can easily consume a fan’s entire week now more than ever. 📅 No Offseason: Ironically, highlighting the NY Giants offseason underscores what those who work with the NFL have known for some time – it has no offseason. Finding a way to feature offseason activities fills arguably the one “gap” in the League calendar – the summertime lull between Draft and Training Camp. Elevating the prominence of Schedule Release is also surely a strategic move to address this formerly brief period of inactivity.

✅🖥️ Marketplace.org (7/8): “Paramount’s not alone, in the sense that they’re trying to become profitable in the wake of having all of these assets that are not as valuable as they once were,” said media consultant Brad Adgate. It’s not just the decline of broadcast television. It’s the challenge of creating a streaming platform that’s profitable. “It really comes down to content. I mean, I think the biggest challenge that subscriber companies have, like a Paramount+, or Disney+, is not getting subscribers, as much as it is keeping subscribers.” Whether Skydance CEO David Ellison, whose father founded Oracle, can turn things around for Paramount is a wait and see situation. University of Minnesota’s Joel Waldfogel is particularly skeptical about the streaming business. “It’s hard to understand how the bringing tech fairy dust in here fundamentally makes it sufficiently attractive relative to the other streaming services that it’s going to attract a lot of interest,” he said. Subscribers only really want to subscribe to maybe three different streaming services. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video take the top two spots. ✅🖥️ Variety (7/16): “Streaming accounted for 40.3% of all TV usage in the U.S in June, per a monthly report from Nielsen. That marks not only the highest proportion of streaming viewership ever recorded in the three years Nielsen began tracking, but the best performance for any single category of viewership. Previously, the record belonged to cable, which reached 40.1% of TV usage in June 2021. With less than one-third of Netflix’s viewership, Amazon Prime Video trailed with 3.1%, and Hulu was next with 3%. Disney+ and Tubi each made up 2% of viewership and were followed by the Roku channel (1.5%), Max (1.4%), Peacock (1.2%), Paramount+ (1.1%) and Pluto (0.8%). 6% of viewership fell into a miscellaneous streaming category. (Note: Nielsen measures viewership on U.S. television sets. Viewership in other countries and on other devices is not accounted for here. Four apps double-digit viewership growth compared to May — Netflix (11.8%), Disney+ 14.8%), Tubi (14.7%) and Max (11%). Each of the four owes at least 20% of its total to younger viewers, which Nielsen defines as those age 2-17. The company also points out that the growth in streaming viewership overall, which is up 6% from May, is partially attributed to young people.
