Today we were awarded a Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) to support the agency’s modernization efforts and its mission to protect human health and the environment. 🔽 See DoD's input request below 🔽 Time for some of those great ideas batted around on LinkedIn to reach the right people in DoD, particularly how to reach small businesses and non-traditional defense contractors and bring them into the fold early in the design, development, and testing processes. The DoD needs DIB expansion. AI, like it or not, is the next big initiative for DoD and most Federal agencies. DoD needs help to make it happen and leveraging AI is going to be an avenue to get it done.

Shout out to my colleague Nathan Manzotti for so deftly describing the state of AI in federal government and highlighting the mission of the AI Community of Practice - to provide training and coordinate knowledge sharing programing across government on Alan Pentz's podcast. Nate and the Data & Analytics Centers for Excellence team at Technology Transformation Services (TTS) are taking on a key role in coordinating the AI-CoP and in conducting data & AI readiness assessments under CoE's fee for service consulting model. https://lnkd.in/gCxRTYjP or https://lnkd.in/ghP8N2eb ** A key take-away for me from Nate's and Alan's convo was that generative AI will kick-off the next big wave of Open Data. ** Troves of federal "data" are stored in paper archives and PDFs, all of which has been too costly and compute intensive to extract, classify, and organize for analysis. But now LLMs could easily unlock the illustrations, tables and text of thousands of documents and organize data into structured JSON files for analysis, visualizations, and application building. **But more than just flat file extractions, the PDFs can be encoded to become a singular (or a broad) corpus to enabling users to Q&A this body of knowledge and run dedicated prompts to summarize operational cohesion, delivery, and performance; pull out sensitive information for redaction; and analyze the change over time in regulations & operating procedures, as to pinpoint inefficiencies for improvement or find "hidden gems" that were valuable to success.

It is kinda funny as I can see he signed this one for "David" in black too (it is v faint but right there). I wonder who David is? The SBA’s Small Business Procurement Scorecard has long suffered from grade inflation, but this year’s inflation is especially egregious. The SBA awarded 10 grades of A+, 12 grades of A and two Bs, with an overall government grade of A—despite the government missing two of the five prime contracting goals and seeing the number of unique small businesses drop once again. Some of the agency-level grades are even crazier: DOD, for example, missed FOUR of the five goals and saw a decline in the number small primes, but still netted an A.

I was using GenAI to help Headquarters for AI build out our upcoming Amazon Web Services (AWS) marketplace offerings (yes, this is a teaser as well), and I realized something today. Like many things with data, "garbage in, garbage out". Very true w/ GenAI. Also, I've found "positivity in, positivity out". If you are going through a tough project, stuck at work, need a pick me up...try GenAI. I'd never replace real human interaction, but I do make a point to be polite and kind, just like I would with a human. While the output from GenAI doesn't really "matter", it did still make me feel good. Be positive, the world gives it back! With the rapid proliferation of #AI, policymakers are challenged to protect the public from AI threats while also supporting innovation. I’m reminded of similar legislative challenges the #government has faced (and continues to face) regarding social media and its effect on every sector. I think we’ve now learned that big technology shifts have broad ripple effects across society, and it’s beneficial to provide guidance to public and private sectors. As Ashley Gold stated in this article from Axios (paywall), “AI is an area of bipartisan interest and agreement. There’s consensus that the government needs to play a role in its development, guidelines, and deployment, but lawmakers have a lot more learning to do before they can roll out significant #legislation.” I’m optimistic that with an aligned vision towards the research, development, and deployment of responsible AI, with human oversight of the #technology along the way, we can achieve continued #innovation, safely. https://lnkd.in/gJCtkhDU

Today's AI roadmap is a pivotal step in shaping the future of transformative technologies. As the AI revolution continues to accelerate, proactive governance frameworks are essential to unlocking innovation while upholding society's core values and ethical imperatives. This move underscores the urgent need for the U.S. to lead in the development of responsible, ethical, and interoperable AI frameworks, and I applaud Leader Schumer and Senators Young, Heinrich, and Rounds for prioritizing this critical issue and committing to the work ahead. At Salesforce we’re fully committed to co-creating sensibly robust yet agile AI policy frameworks that balance rapid technological progress with society’s evolving needs around privacy, security, and responsible data stewardship. Over the past 2 months we have seen the DoD move toward the adoption of the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) for the Defense Industry Base, as part of the DoD DIB cyber strategy, and clearer oversight of their implementation of the Risk Management Framework (RMF), DoDi 8510.01 and DoDi 5000.90. As cyber regulation in the U.S and EU aligns around cybersecurity risk management, the U.S National and international DIB will be affected by both the focus the DoD is placing on the CSF and RMF for the management of cybersecurity based upon risk. Thaddeus Dziekanowski and Brian D. McCarthy the DoD, DIB and the boards of covered entities require a greater understanding of the RMF (NIST SP 800-37), FISMA, the CSF 2.0 and associated DoDIs. "The move would kick off a lengthy rule-making process" Although encouraged by the step forward, I am all too aware of the federal public policy rules making process being were great ideas go to die. I'm sure people in my network could educate me more, but which organizations are best setup to be resourced to be a part of that federal rules-making process, and do they have the backing / incentives to make sure that process benefits consumers and the industry at large (as opposed to just those at the top)? As an industry we are heavily fractured towards the local and state level processes (because thats were the licenses are handed out). What interest groups will be represented at the federal level? In other industries billions are spent on informing federal policy through gaming the rules-making system. Not sure we as an industry have billions to spend...
