Here's how you can boost your problem-solving abilities through continuing education in game design.
Learning continously comes naturally to some and difficult to the majority. I myself have an unquenchable curiosity for all things game design, but if you don't have that innately, you'll need to do this: Keep a journal and as you play games analyze your area of expertise. Determine what's bad from good, and then re-design so that it appeals to YOU. There is a general baseline of what's good or bad, but knowing WHY it's good or bad from your own experience and opinion will help you learn the general baseline (per genre) faster, and will also help you learn your own biases. As you continuously write in your journal, over time you'll begin to analyze automatically as you play. Don't try to consume knowledge just to consume. It's too much

Here's how you can master effective decision-making in game design.
Goals are important but should come in 2nd place to Player Fantasy. You can create goal of how you want your game to operate, but without determining the Player Fantasy first, you'll make a generic game that doesn't grip the player. Examples of Player Fantasy: - Vikings that possess advanced sci-fi tech like The Predator. - Mushroom Scorcerer that uses its own spores to cast power magicks. You see how those two examples paint a picture that make your mind run wild? Let your mind run wild for a stretch, and then: 1. Begin to solidify the gameplay experience that would fulfill that Player Fantasy 2. Set 3 core pillars/themes that mechanics, systems, art, etc. Would need to adhere to in order to stay within the Fantasy. 3. THEN set goals.
