    “It can be challenging at times to provide technological support and consultation in a university setting due to the diverse--and sometimes competing--interests and needs of our constituents, departments, and academic divisions. Simply put, there's no one size fits all solution. As our manager, Thomas understood this, and managed in such a way that allowed our group the autonomy and flexibility to tailor specific solutions and recommendations to the areas we served. At the same time, Thomas provided the leadership, vision, and structure that enabled our team to succeed, and emphasized the connection between the goals of our team and the broader goals of the university as a whole. Thomas cares deeply about his staff. On a professional level, Thomas is a strong advocate for professional development, and constantly sought out opportunities to develop his team. On a personal level, Tom made a genuine effort to build healthy relationships with those that he managed. Although he was firm in his vision and confident in the goals he set for our team, he encouraged us to challenge him. In the world of information technology, especially in a large bureaucratic organization such as Pepperdine, simply having management abilities and technical expertise does not guarantee success. Even with a well defined strategy, one needs to know the right people and have the right competencies to implement. Thomas possessed the knack for bringing people together to solve problems, breaking down barriers between different teams and departments. This was evidenced by the strong working relationships that Tom had with faculty and staff, administrators, and other IT directors. In addition, Tom worked tirelessly to bridge the gap in understand between the IT department and the university as a whole by framing IT projects in terms of business and educational value. Thomas will be an incredible asset to any organization that is lucky enough to have him. As someone with business intelligence, strong managerial skills, vision, and the hard to quantify attributes that make him a connector, Tom equipped to handle the information technology challenges that universities face today, tomorrow, and beyond.”
