When you file a disability claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), you might undergo a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam. This exam helps the VA determine if your disability is connected to your military service, assess its severity, and see if it has worsened over time, which could impact your disability rating. There are two main ways to get your C&P exam results, but they differ in speed: - The Fastest Way: This option allows you to receive your results much quicker. It involves working with an accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO). These VSOs have access to a system called the Veteran Benefits Management System (VBMS) which allows them to download your exam report directly. It's important to remember that waiting times can differ significantly between veterans, so even if the average processing time is stated as 12-18 weeks, there's always a chance it could take longer in your specific case. So many moving moments and testimony during the D-Day commemorations and much reflection on the courage, resolve and determination of the soldiers, sailors and airmen who took part, and those who led them. In business we talk endlessly about leadership, and listen to all sorts of self-styled gurus, but for D-Day Axios ran a great piece based on retired U.S. Army colonel John Antal’s book "7 Leadership Lessons of D-Day: Lessons from the Longest Day." Antal believes that the heroism and leadership on D-Day can be a source of both inspiration and insight for today’s leaders, and has the following 6 lessons: 1.         Leadership is the art of influence. "A leader with confidence can influence teammates to believe in success." 2.         Leaders first learn to follow. "If you won't listen to anyone, you cannot lead." 3.         Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision. Army Lt. Col. James Earl Rudder, who on D-Day led his Army Rangers up the steep cliffs at Pointe du Hoc to capture a Germany artillery position, said years after the war that he was just as afraid as anyone else — sometimes even more so, as he knew the big picture. But he said fear was good because it generated awareness of danger. 4.         Leaders adapt, improvise and overcome. "Sometimes ... a good plan will work. Most likely, however, the friction of operations will impact the plan and the plan will start to unravel. When that happens, leaders must step in, inspire, and direct their team members to adapt the plan." 5.         Leaders position themselves for decision points. "The skilled leader learns from study and experience where and when to be to make important decisions." 6.         Leadership is by example. "If you have an ineffective team, most likely you have an ineffective leader." True leaders, Antal writes, are on a lifelong journey "to master the skills of influencing people to succeed." The importance of confidence and adaptation; fear as a reaction and courage as a decision, and positioning for and recognizing key decision points have particular resonance for me. I coach and run workshops to help create 'Causative' leaders, those who lead by serving and are purpose-led themselves. Transitioning from military to civilian life is a monumental shift, filled with both challenges and opportunities. Answer: Yes, but only for certain benefits If you're a veteran joining the Reserves or National Guard after active duty, you need to choose between VA compensation and drill pay – you can't receive both at the same time. However, veterans eligible for Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay (CRDP) or Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) can receive compensation from both the DoD and the VA. Q: Is the VA sending out Stimulus Checks? A: Circulating rumors about VA stimulus checks for disabled veterans are false. The VA is not currently distributing any stimulus payments. Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 10% or more qualify for VA disability compensation, with the amount based on disability severity. Those with a 30% rating or higher may also receive tax-free compensation for dependents. Additionally, some disabled veterans might be eligible for the VA's Special Monthly Compensation program for specific disabilities or combinations of disabilities. Over the weekend, I caught up with an old friend and my first flight commander from the USMC, Art Behnke, callsign 'Rico'. Our chat took me back to a moment that has stayed with me throughout my career. I was joining a course of Replacement Aircrew about to learn how to fly and fight the F/A-18. Rico was our flight commander. At our initial briefing, he stood before us, calm and confident, and said something I’ll never forget: “If you’re ever stuck or stranded, call me. Whatever time of day or night, I’ll be there.” Despite having a newborn at home, his commitment to us never wavered. That’s the kind of leader he was—and still is. Fast forward to today, and Art is running a thriving logistics business. Enjoying the view from a rooftop in Dubai, he shared stories that made me realize his leadership philosophy hasn’t changed one bit. His company maintains a culture of Safety, Teamwork, Development, and Growth. He remains firmly invested in the personal and professional development of his team, recognizing that his company’s success is dependent on his employees’ success. And these aren’t just words; he recently put one of his operations leaders through a business owner’s course. That person now runs their own successful company. Now, he’s mentoring one of his first delivery drivers to become an operations leader and eventually they too might progress to running their own business. Art’s lifelong commitment to being a supportive leader has paid dividends, not just for him but for everyone around him. It’s a reminder that the best leaders don’t just set the direction—they walk the journey with you, offering support and development every step of the way. Providing support and development is one of the fundamental requirements of leadership: 1️⃣ Set the Direction: Give your team a clear vision to aim for. 2️⃣ Take Accountability: Own outcomes and failures. 3️⃣ Provide Support and Development: Invest in your people, help them grow.
