As the debate over spectrum policy continues, the incumbent mobile industry continues to malign and inhibit the growth of technologies and spectrum uses that promote competition, innovation, wireless access, and consumer savings. The Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment or BEAD Program is a once in a lifetime opportunity to connect all Americans. But to do that, we have to get the requirements around the deployment right. At the recent Connect (X): Powered by WIA conference I spoke about why it’s so important that states' BEAD programs look to trusted and experienced providers like Verizon who have the skills and experienced workforce not just to build correctly, but to maintain and care for those networks and serve residents for years to come.  #broadbandforeveryone #BEAD

What a great Opportunity we all have in front of us! Rural America is going digital, fueled by $42 billion in federal broadband investment through the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program. But how will states choose to deploy that money over the next two years? It is imperative that state leaders go local with BEAD funds. Most Charter/Spectrum Customers Ditch Pay TV—One of the nation’s two largest cable TV providers is reporting that 56% of its customers no longer pay for cable TV. While internet-only service from Spectrum has become the norm, that didn’t stop Charter from shedding 72,000 internet customers as well. Only Spectrum’s wireless business is growing, but that product is a VMNO reselling access to Verizon’s network. Spectrum has been one of the more aggressive big cable players in working to define its post-cable future, driving a hard bargain with Disney, offering virtual pay-TV products, and seemingly prepared to exit the cable TV business all together if the headwinds become too great. Once-in-a-generation funding initiatives (including the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment - BEAD - program) have created extensive opportunities for unprecedented broadband infrastructure development in underserved and rural communities. While funding programs hold great promise for advancing digital equity, the current broadband workforce is ill-equipped to meet required labor demands. In fact, according to the WEF Future of Jobs report, 61% of workers will require retraining by 2027.      Some present-day challenges include:     A tech talent deficit: Unprecedented demand for install and repair techs, combined with low awareness of the potential for broadband careers among the public and in schools.   Outdated education resources: Technical colleges lack modern broadband education resources which leads to student loss and faculty/employer frustration.      We need new methods to reach high-potential candidates and mentoring to create a scalable, locally sourced workforce.      Calix recognizes that developing effective solutions to bridge the skills gap is vital to customer success.
