  • BIMStorm: BIM Big Bang (2011)

Our most ambitious BIMStorm effort to date. I led and assembled a team of over 50 professionals to work on three different BIMStorm projects, with three entirely different purposes of: conceptual design development, facility information modeling and COBie, and energy/sustainability driven design solutions. All three teams had 3 days to take nothing more than basic programming information and develop unique project solutions. The teams were scattered across the globe, and had to work…

All three teams had 3 days to take nothing more than basic programming information and develop unique project solutions. The teams were scattered across the globe, and had to work virtually, and adapt quickly using BIM and technology to facilitate a collaborative development process.

  • BIMStorm 13571 (2010)

Refining our work and processes from the 2009 BIMStorm event, we grew our team to 25+ individuals from Balfour Beatty and partners from around the globe to develop an approach to re-developing a critical area of dowtown DC near the capital and national mall. We developed plans for air rights platform construction, revitalizing the local neighborhood, implementing zero energy strategies, urban planning and development techniques.

  • BIMStorm: Build Hospital Live (2009)

I joined a unique team of 10-12 virtual team members to quickly develop a project solution in only 3 days, complete with design, engineering, cost, schedule and presentation. Inadequacies in size, sound quality, accessibility, and the overall experience for theater patrons contributed to a growing divide between the needs of the community and the capabilities of their center for the arts.

The design includes 10 community buildings (three apartment buildings with retail, library, dining hall, recreation center, natatorium, mosque, supermarket and bowling alley), a 200-house residential community (including 11 house types) and four main utility buildings. The site design incorporates a photovoltaic energy field and wastewater wetlands on 200 hectares. The project is aiming to achieve LEED® Platinum certification.

The site is organized around a linear, central green space. The community buildings are located at the heart of the site, a position chosen for functional and symbolic reasons. The massing of the central community buildings reinforces the strength of the site concept. The two main buildings in the center of the green open space have sculptural roofs, continuing the feeling of motion across the east-west axis of the site. The curving, flat-seam metal roofs of the central dining facility and library extend off the building, transforming into flowing shade canopies. These two structures face each other across the central plaza, creating a dialogue between the buildings.

This major addition to UVA's University Hospital addresses the significant need for more space in the current emergency department.
