You can now embed Bifrost in your application. The new Executor and Geometry SDKs complement the Operator SDK to allow the excution of graphs and manipulation of geometry. Oh, also a node library browser, rigging workflows, 61 new nodes and a plethora of bug fixes. #bifrost #maya #autodeskemployee

Another great resource for level design and #gameart is Dimensions.com. It’s a database with common measurements and construction terminology used for everyday objects, buildings, trees, etc. A goldmine of information!

I've found online knowledge of how to simply convert a movie file and play it as a fullscreen Bink in Unreal Engine to be a bit lacking, so I made a tutorial explaining this process. Here's a look at our prop texturing workflow for Project ORCS! 🎨 We used custom Substance Painter tools to speed up our workflow & push the art style. Final textures are baked into vertex colors using Houdini to fully utilize Unreal Engine 5's Nanite. The vertex color workflow was developed by Jarred Everson and the sculpt is by Micao Penaflor. Lighting and additional tech art is by Igor Titov. All the Substance Painter stuff of the workflow is by me :) WORKFLOW: 1. Use my Substance Painter smart materials to get a good base with automatic edge highlights 2. Use smart materials to add algae/ dirt 3. Finishing touches with my custom brushes -> export to Houdini 4. Use Houdini to bake base color & roughness into vertex color data (roughness is baked into Alpha channel) 5. Import in Unreal Engine as Nanite Asset - use vertex color data instead of textures ADVANTAGES: - you don't need texture maps in Unreal Engine anymore! (no normal map + AO as it's high poly, no basecolor & roughness as it's packed into vertex color, we still use a tiny packed mask for Metalness & Emissive tho) - get nice geometry detail and silhouette without paying for it - Substance Painter part allows for quicker texturing while still pushing the style - with our stylized art style for most assets there was no huge visual difference DISADVANTAGES: - for some assets you lose some visual fidelity, esp. apparent in finer detail roughness maps - only really suitable for stylized art styles - need to add extra surface variation to sculpts - heavily relies on sculpts - less flexible than other workflows (altho you can still alter the baked texture data with Unreal material editor) #madewithsubstance #unrealengine #gamedevelopment #3dartist made with: SideFX Software Houdini, Adobe Substance 3D Painter & Designer, and Epic Games's Unreal Engine 5

Have a backup plan for your backup plan. I've had multiple friends in the animation industry share a similar story: They applied to a job, got the offer, began the process of moving to the new location, and then literally in the middle of the move, the company shut down and there was no longer a role available. It's one of the most frustrating things I've ever heard about in the job market. It's also important to remember that while we might say "why wouldn't they stop hiring if they know the company is doing poorly?", sometimes the information of what's really happening behind the scenes is kept behind closed doors. So please don't come at an HR rep with pitchforks for doing their job with a lack of information from the top. These stories to me are a reminder that if you're relocating for a job, you should prepare for what could happen when that job ends. When I moved to San Francisco, I had an 8 month contract, but in the 3rd month I already had a list of places I would apply to and build relationships with in the event I didn't get hired full-time (which was the case). In between jobs, I used my previous babysitting and summer camp skills to work at a children's museum. It was a lot of fun and gave me the stability I needed while pursuing the next gig. You never know what can happen, so give backup plans some serious thought! #JobMarket #JobAdvice #BePrepared

Revisting an old facial rig that I built in Motionbuilder for my Daz characters, ripping off some of the geo from the UE faceboard for metahumans. Going to use if for a little demo we are working on, taking advantage of the last months of my Performer license.. sigh Need to learn how to build these in Maya

In this video, I show a way to place foliage procedurally within Unreal. I use the Landscape material layers to limit where certain types of foliage will appear.
