Engineers and Machinists: Zero is a special number! Andy Thompson P.E., posts a great question - one that I have dedicated most of my career looking at from as many angles as I can - picking it apart. To use zero position at MMC or not use zero position at MMC? That is the question! When designing parts in assemblies, its important to know when to use zero position at MMC and when to use a non-zero position at MMC. As many in this thread have stated, zero position gives the machinist the most positional tolerance available. If this is true, why wouldnt an engineer just use zero at MMC all the time? The answer is found at the level of the assembly requirements. In my exhaustive decade long pursuit of this same question, I found what an engineer should use a zero position at MMC when they only care about controlling max assembly slop. If the design requires to hold a minimum amount of part slop, then some position value greater than zero is best that agrees with the stackup. Another way to think about this is renaming position tolerance to "risk" If you specify a zero position at MMC, you are imposing no additional risk on manufacturing. the more you increase the position tolerance from zero, the more risk you are imposing on manufacturing. This is because non-zero position tolerance at MMC is costing you something in the form of another requirement - that is controlling the min slop of parts in an assembly. Sometimes you need to go back to basic CAD (Cardboard Aided Design). After a week of looking at some of the most advanced manufacturing and design tech in the world at RAPID + TCT, I had some downtime to work on my motorcycles. It was a reminder of what I tell everyone. Use the technology that makes sense for your application. If the tech doesn’t bring value to your application, then it’s not right. But always assess all the tools at your disposal, whether that’s advanced metal 3D printing or the Amazon box and roll of masking tape in the corner. #manufacturing #3DPrinting #classicmotorcycles

I’ve spent most of my career advocating for the adoption of #additivemanufacturing and #3dprinting. You could argue I’m biased in favor of this technology. With all the advantages and (past?) hype associated with AM, is it now replacing traditional methods like CNC machining or not?
