“‘A good rule of thumb in decision making is, whenever you cannot decide what you should do, choose the action that represents a change, rather than continuing the status quo.’” That’s the conclusion of University of Chicago economist and co-author of #Freakonomics, Steven Levitt, after conducting a study that asked people who were having a hard time making a decision to settle it via a randomized digital coin toss. In Levitt’s experiment, heads meant taking action; tails, sticking with the status quo. Of 2000 coin tosses, those who got heads and made a big change reported being significantly happier than they were before, two months and six months later. - Changing our lives—quitting a job, ending a relationship, going back to school, starting a business, moving—takes work and emotional energy; we usually don't know if it will make us happier or be a big mistake, and we're more worried about what we'll lose than we are excited about what we might gain. We agonize over the decision, with most people predisposed to sticking with the status quo instead of taking a risk towards a different life. - There are a lot of caveats to the study, but even with its limitations, the results suggest that “if the choice is between action and inaction, and you’re genuinely unsure about what to do, choose action.” With all the uncertainty around us these days, we can’t count on the status quo so we might as well choose action/change. We think we're choosing staying in our jobs or quitting; but our job may be eliminated anyway, so starting our own business becomes just another way to get re-employed than a daunting change. - The article ends with a cautionary quote from writer Sady Doyle: “It is easy—maybe too easy—to . . .stay close to the things that you think will make you safe. This is wrong, and I will tell you why: you are never safe. Loss and change are constants. An insightful conversation last evening regarding the relationship between the CEO and Board Chair at Graphic Packaging International, LLC. Michael Doss and Philip Martens shared not only how to build a successful relationship, but also discussed the transition from COO to CEO (hint: it's not easy!). The Board has to be actively engaged in succession planning, and spend a significant amount of board time getting to know high-potential employees within the organization. Capital allocation is key - how does the Board ensure they are allocating the shareholder's capital most effectively? All board member's perspectives must be heard and included in the discussion...which means ensuring board members with diverse perspectives are on the Board and actively engaged. Philip Martens also shared his approach to on-boarding new board members, and the role of the Board Chair in ensuring the right board members are recruited and feel comfortable in voicing their perspectives in the board room.
