Happy #CostModelMonday! I did a #fan-out panel-level versus wafer-level comparison at #IMAPS DPC this year, and I'm expanding on it for the IMAPS Symposium. I had a single #yield chart in my analysis previously, looking at yield crossover points in relation to how expensive the incoming chip was. I did a new analysis that looks at when the crossover point occurs for two different panel sizes. In this chart, the same package is built with fan-out packaging on a 300mm wafer and from two different panel sizes. The yield for the 300mm wafer example is held steady at 99%, while the yield is changed for the panel-level processes. For the package built with the 515x510mm panel, the crossover point occurs just past 95%. However, the crossover point is closer to 94% for the package from the 600x600mm panel. In other words, a little more yield loss can be sustained by the package from the larger panel before it no longer competes with a higher yielding package from the wafer.

Proposed CHIPS Investment of up to $6.4 Billion Would Complement More than $40 Billion in Private Investment to Support a Comprehensive Semiconductor Cluster for Leading-Edge Logic, Advanced Packaging, and R&D in Taylor, Texas, and Expansion of Austin Fab in Texas Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Samsung Electronics (Samsung) have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $6.4 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen the resilience of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, advance U.S. technology leadership, and fuel U.S. global competitiveness. Samsung – the only leading-edge semiconductor company that is a leader in both advanced memory and advanced logic technologies – is expected to invest more than $40 billion dollars in the region in the coming years, and the proposed investment would support the creation of over 20,000 jobs. The proposed investment would turn Samsung’s existing presence in Texas into a comprehensive ecosystem for the development and production of leading-edge chips in the United States, including two new leading-edge logic fabs, an R&D fab, and an advanced packaging facility in Taylor, as well as an expansion to their existing Austin facility. It also demonstrates Samsung’s ongoing commitment to the United States, where it has been manufacturing chips since 1996. By continuing to develop the technologies of the future in the United States, Samsung is taking steps that would work towards strengthening U.S. economic and national security and increasing the resilience of both the U.S. and global semiconductor supply chains. #HBM Prices to Increase by 5–10% in 2025, Accounting for Over 30% of Total #DRAM Value, Says TrendForce Corporation 💡 Avril Wu, TrendForce Senior Research Vice President, reports that the HBM market is poised for robust growth, driven by significant pricing premiums and increased capacity needs for AI #chips. HBM's unit sales price is several times higher than that of conventional DRAM and about five times that of #DDR5. This pricing, combined with product iterations in AI #chip #technology that increase single-device HBM capacity, is expected to dramatically raise HBM’s share in both the capacity and market value of the DRAM market from 2023 to 2025. Specifically, HBM’s share of total DRAM bit capacity is estimated to rise from 2% in 2023 to 5% in 2024 and surpass 10% by 2025. In terms of market value, HBM is projected to account for more than 20% of the total DRAM market value starting in 2024, potentially exceeding 30% by 2025. Apprenticeships Aim to Meet Texas Chip Sector Talent Demands The graying of the semiconductor workforce as onshore manufacturing ramps up means the days of chip companies poaching each other’s talent are numbered—their local communities must develop talent through the collaboration of schools and workforce development organizations. In the first of two panel discussions hosted by the National Institute of Innovation and Technology (NIIT), those collaborating to help build the talent pipeline for Texas’s semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors said they are working to deliver flexible options for apprenticeships to meet the demand for skilled workers with options that allow apprentices to earn a living while learning. https://lnkd.in/eJrKCc2J

【Industry news】 As #TSMC's #3-nanometer #supply exceeds #demand, all four major customers' #production #capacity is fully covered. #TSMC's 3-nanometer #orders are expected to be full until 2026. According to reports, #NVIDIA, #Apple, #AMD and #Qualcomm are now considering #raising #AI #hardware #prices. #TSMC's #production #capacity plan for this year has tripled compared with last year, but it is still not enough. #Industry #demand is currently at its peak. In addition, TSMC's N3P process is also widely used in the #mobile field. Overall, the 3nm lineup is quite complete. It is not yet certain whether TSMC will increase prices as a result, but it emphasized that "pricing strategies are always strategy-oriented, not opportunity-oriented, and will continue to work closely with customers to provide value." However, foreign media believe that as the #supply of 3 nanometers exceeds demand, TSMC is likely to increase prices, which will affect IC design companies. TSMC is currently planning to convert some 5-nanometer #equipment to #support 3-nanometer #production #capacity, and the industry expects monthly production capacity to increase to 120,000 to 180,000 pieces. However, the industry has not yet considered the production capacity needs of Intel's Lunar Lake #processors. Although it cannot yet be determined whether the price of consumer products will increase due to #3nm #supply disruptions, these indicators indicate that this will happen.

Tracking the Progress of the CHIPS R&D Programs Enacted in 2022 to promote U.S.-based semiconductor production and innovation, the CHIPS & Science Act is the most significant federal investment ever made in the U.S. semiconductor industry. While much attention is focused on the CHIPS incentives grant program, the other pillar of the CHIPS Act is also critically important: a substantial, $13 billion investment over 5 years in semiconductor research and development (R&D). The Department of Commerce is responsible for $11 billion, and the Department of Defense is responsible for $2 billion.  To assist the industry and other stakeholders in monitoring the progress of the CHIPS R&D Programs, SIA launched today a new resource tracking the progress of these initiatives. The CHIPS R&D programs include: CHIPS National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) CHIPS National Advanced Packaging Manufacturing Program (NAPMP) CHIPS Metrology Program (Metrology) CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute (MFG USA) DOD Microelectronics Commons (ME Commons) Thus far, the Department of Commerce has committed $5 billion to the NSTC, which will be operated by the National Center for the Advancement of Semiconductor Technology (Natcast) and $3 billion to the NAPMP. There is also an open funding opportunity for up to $285 million for MFG USA to establish the CHIPS Digital Twins Manufacturing USA Institute (SIA is supportive of an effort by the Semiconductor Research Corporation to lead this initiative). The CHIPS Metrology Program will be allocated approximately $519 million, and the program is currently supporting at least 30 ongoing research projects. Meanwhile, DOD has selected the 8 hubs that will serve as leaders of the ME Commons, committing $238 million of their total $2 billion. Intel Corporation: Received the largest grant of $8.5 billion, plus an additional $11 billion in government loans. Intel plans to invest $100 billion in new and expanded facilities across Arizona, Ohio, Oregon, and New Mexico. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company): Awarded $6.6 billion to construct a new chip plant with three fabs in Arizona. TSMC is expected to invest $65 billion in this project. Samsung Semiconductor: Received $6.4 billion in funding from the U.S. government. Micron Technology: Granted $6.1 billion to support its plans of investing $50 billion through 2030 for new fabs in Idaho and New York. GlobalFoundries: Awarded $1.5 billion in funding. Microchip Technology Inc. Technology: Received $162 million. The trade tensions between the United States and China intensify as President Biden implements increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), solar cells, and semiconductors. (Source: The White House, compiled by DIGITIMES Asia, May 2024). The US government announced the long-waited tariff revision on an array of China-made products on May 14. Tariffs on Chinese EVs were hiked from 25% to 100%, while those on solar cells were raised from 25% to 50%. China's Ministry of Commerce immediately said the move substantially impacted the collaboration between the two countries, vowing to take resolute measures to defend China's interests. US President Joe Biden has announced new tariffs on China-made products, building on former President Donald Trump's policy. The most significant increase is a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). Biden emphasized that the US will not allow China to flood its market and undermine American automotive manufacturers. According to Reuters, tariffs on EV batteries and other battery parts have been raised from 7.5% to 25%, while solar cells now face a 25% tariff. Biden stated that Chinese solar manufacturers are driving European competitors out of business and vowed to prevent this in the US. Additionally, a 50% tariff on China-made semiconductors will take effect in 2025, and a 25% tariff on natural graphite, permanent magnets, and medical gloves will follow in 2026. The White House indicated that these measures will impact $18 billion worth of goods imported from China. However, the effect on Chinese EVs is expected to be minimal, as data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed that Geely was the only Chinese carmaker exporting vehicles to the US in the first quarter of 2024, with over 2,200 cars shipped. China's commerce ministry criticized the US for politicizing trade issues and expressed strong dissatisfaction, claiming the new tariffs violate Biden's vow not to decouple from China. The ministry called for the immediate cancellation of the additional tariffs and warned that China would take measures to protect its interests. In his May 14 speech, Biden described the tariffs as strategic and targeted, accusing China of unfair practices such as cyber espionage and state subsidies in sectors like steel, aluminum, semiconductors, EVs, and solar panels. US Domestic IC Assembly - Enhanced Plastic - Old School? Working on a driver IC for space applications at high pin-pin voltage, I find no onshore options besides QFNs with too-fine lead pitch for the voltage. Given low market volumes a custom package development is not a great plan. I'm liking the older quad J-lead / gullwing for their compliant leads (board flex @ shock/vibe or launch, etc.). Only find these at overseas OSAT houses in my searching thus far. Do you like, or fear, hard body non-leaded packages in your application, qualification and launch environment? Could use some insights from the likely users of such a part or those who've gone down this road. Call it 250V pin-pin. Can I count on a general practice of conformal coating which would (in theory) raise the pin-pin potential (volts/distance) suitably (and are the basic PCB creepage specs, all there is to it?) or is New Space so much about cost, that this treatment might be skipped? Based on what you know about board construction, what't your "happy place" for max volts per mm or mil, continuous (VIN) and pulsed (SW)? I'm thinking a 50-mil pitch leaded package (can't see any QFNs at that pitch) might be the answer but would really like to stay onshore. And the whole bit about leaded vs unleaded, I've got mostly old ideas based on hermetic package back-end and strategic systems thermal & mechanical. Anybody know of any legit, space grade, onshore, old school leadframes, good MSL mold compound service providers? I know it's not asking much.

1/3 of Chinese solar didn’t exist in 2022. Yes. You read it right. They grew their fleet by 48% in 2023. Growth rate increased 60%. This has already a meme by some pro-nuclear advocates. They are comparing installed capacity at the end of the year with total production over the year . Showing how poor solar is doing. They just make the small mistake that 1/3 of the capacity didn’t exist for most of the year. And what they fail to mention, is that this growth rate is just industry output. And that this industry produces 80% of the PV in the rest of the world. So when they don’t change a single thing.. they can keep adding 1/3 PV capacity for a long time. That means in just a few years they have more solar energy than even the Chinese can handle… While the rest of the world is still sucking oil… And by then way.. nuclear grew 0% https://lnkd.in/eZmUwiQm

Just as we feared, our January 3 percent growth assumption for Q1-2024 has proved optimistic. The first quarter crashed, wiping US$13 billion off the quarter, which, in turn, has reduced our full year forecast by US$50 billion. Low unit sales, driven by ‘take of pay’ long-term price agreements (LTAs) from the Covid-boom era, are exacerbating industry attempts to rein back excess inventory. Just like the emperor’s new clothes, the supposed 2024 Super-Cycle has evaporated in a puff of smoke. It always was a delusion, Q1 removed all doubt.
