He turned a $2.75 million investment into $7 BILLION within three years: That's the magic Vinod Khosla orchestrated with his impeccable investment into Juniper Networks, crafting what is now hailed as one of the topmost VC investments in history. Beyond the Juniper triumph, Khosla's Midas touch further shone bright in 1997 when he incubated Cerent. Just two short years later, Cerent was scooped up by Cisco for an impressive $7.8 billion. Siara wasn't far behind, earning a cool $4.3 billion from Redback. Let's not forget his seed investment that propelled Excite to a $6.7 billion merger with Home Network. A noteworthy feat, wouldn't you agree? By the time these investments were hitting the headlines, Khosla was entrenched at the hallowed VC institution, Kleiner Perkins (KP). But it wasn't a coincidence. Years of mutual trust had been formed when KP invested in Sun Microsystems, Khosla's venture that later sold to Oracle for $5.6 billion in 2009! As we marvel at his spectacular track record, Khosla humbly acknowledges, "Nobody in the VC business has failed as much as I have." Are your reference checks truly effective? Mohit Aron, founder of Cohesity and Nutanix, believes they can be—if done right. Generic questions like "Is this person good?" often yield low-signal responses. Instead, Aron takes a systematic approach, asking references to rate candidates on a 1-10 scale. This numeric calibration reveals far more insights than broad qualitative questions. It also allows references to provide negative feedback by framing it as faint praise. One of my Wharton students founded a company that is still in stealth mode. During a lunch, he asked me if I thought it was necessary to build a physical prototype to increase the likliehood of success seeking subsequent funding. My answer was, “Yes”. He gently reminded me that digital twins can more accurately portray reality than reality can. It was a very good point. I stuck with my assertion that there was something psychologically powerful about being able to experience a physical object, but I had to admit that his strategy of going digital made sense. Thoughts? Some things are more clearly better twinned than others.
