"GE Appliances began restructuring its supply chain in 2017, years before the pandemic, to try to better balance production and demand. The company in 2020 opted to accelerate the effort even as it coped with product shortages as homebound consumers rushed to undertake home-renovation projects.  One of the biggest changes has been to bring more manufacturing into the U.S. from Asia. GE Appliances has added 4,000 manufacturing jobs across its nine U.S. plants over the past seven years. Shifting production from overseas has cut shipping costs by reducing the number of bulky appliances that are sent across the Pacific Ocean and has given GE Appliances more control over production." I was recently invited to participate in a discussion panel around risks and opportunities in Mexico in light of the upcoming general election. It is clear that many companies are on a holding pattern on new investments and hiring new headcount, uncertain about the possible ramifications of the June 2 election. From my perspective, the benefits of investing in Mexico far outweight the risks. Indeed, investments in infraestructure will continue to be required, also certainty on energy, education and labor policies, and an overall improvement in security are key. Having said that, the amount of capable talent available, the proximity to the world’s #1 economy and the possibility to build Supply Chains that have proven to be reliable and far less complex should be factors enticing enough for companies to continue investing in Mexico. I appreciate and value the opinions of the other members of the panel. I just seem to have a more positive vision about the future…regardless of who wins the election. As always, Mexico and its smart, hard-working people will prove to be a driving force larger and better than any particular administration.

90% of the budget for this segment of government workers went to pay their salaries. That means the 10% remaining was most likely not having any impact at all on the mission of this group. That's government employment. We could probably balance our budget if we took the same approach in this country. The WEF should concentrate on bloated government payrolls when seeking out the top useless eaters. Oh wait, those people are WEF affiliated.
