GAUGING INTEREST Nielsen dropped their "new-look" Distributor Gauge yesterday. My take - with info they omit - is below. Nielsen chose their own headlines for this Gauge, as is their right, focussing their boldface type on: DISNEY REMAINS TOP MOUSE TUBI DRIVES GROWTH FOR FOX FAST IS FAST! All are true-ish. To be honest, digging into the numbers not much changed at all from their April Gauge... but... - There's one less publisher on THIS May Gauge - dropping from 15 publishers tracked to 14. Why tho? - Nielsen notes that FOX jumped from 6.1% to 6.4% in large part driven by Tubi. Nice. - They fail to note that the LARGEST growth comes from what they do not track and do not report: Unaccounted Viewing, which grew more than 1% from 26.3% in April to 27.4% in May. - ERRYBODY in TV needs to note that it takes ALL OF DISNEY to beat YouTube by itself - and ALL of NBCUniversal, Paramount, and Disco Bros to lose to YouTube. This Gauge is much more useful and instructive than the OG Gauge. But it STILL begs that we continue to ask MORE questions of Nielsen, not less. AND it calls on trade journalists to not JUST copy-and-paste their headlines, but to read the data, ask questions, and then write your own. Question without notice: is the media industry obsessed with outputs over outcomes? How many times have you seen a PCA almost entirely focused on impressions, CPM and CPV, and nothing about brand uplift or MROI? AM/FM now accounts for 43% of spoken word listening, and podcasts 36%. So, the margin has gone from 53 percentage points to 7 percentage points in the last seven years. Podcasting’s share of spoken word will almost surely surpass that of AM/FM within a few more years.   There is one more thing to note – the advantage for AM/FM is coming entirely from those age 65 and older. Among those ages 13-64, podcasting has already passed AM/FM listening by, 41% to 39%. Meanwhile, among the oldest Americans age 65+, AM/FM radio continues to dominate, with a 66%-13% advantage. Curiously, that 66%-13% difference among the oldest Americans is the exact same difference we recorded for all Americans 13+ in 2017.

With the robust age diversity of our team members, there are plenty of folks here who can remember when “agencies” could expect and depend upon a consistent list of work from clients – a certain number of TV spots, print ads, promo assets, social media posts, etc. But determining how a concept might come to life is so 2003. To better align with client needs, SYNERGISTIC pitches our clients ideas – and our ability to strategically execute them – vs. the specific delivery vehicle. And all of this reflects a change in what clients actually need. A recent Fast Company article proves a larger shift in the industry: the bulk of heavy lifting, and consequently agency staffing, should now lean much heavier toward the creative and strategy side of things, rather than production. All of which explains the wave of big lay-offs at most agencies – the number of full-time staffers required for daily production efforts is much lower now. From Robinhood: OpenAI’s mega WSJ licensing deal could reshape news as publishers choose sides on AI Good night, and good luck… ChatGPT’s about to consume a lot more articles about ChatGPT. Wall Street Journal owner News Corp and OpenAI sealed what appears to be the largest AI news-licensing deal ever, said to be worth $250M+ over a half decade. The partnership will give OpenAI the right to use articles from News Corp brands (like WSJ, MarketWatch, New York Post) to answer user questions and train its bots. It’s the latest example of the beleaguered news industry warming up to Big Tech. Fit to print: OpenAI’s made similar licensing deals with publishers including Axel Springer (Business Insider, Politico), IAC’s Dotdash Meredith (People), and the Associated Press. Google’s reportedly paying small outlets to produce articles with AI. Counterpoint: Publishers including The New York Times and the Chicago Trib have sued OpenAI and Microsoft over copyright infringement. ~90% of major US news outlets have installed blockers to prevent their sites from being crawled for AI training. We’ve read this before… Silicon Valley’s penchant for pivoting can upend mastheads (nearly 3K newspapers have closed or merged since 2005). For years, newsrooms have been at the whim of algorithmic shifts by Meta and Google, which’ve dramatically affected web traffic. Before AI news-licensing deals, there were social-media deals. In 2019, Meta launched Facebook’s News tab, signing content partnerships with publishers like the WSJ. Then it scrapped them in a pandemic switch to creator content, pulverizing its $2B news budget by 95%. Now Meta’s said to be considering news deals once again — this time for AI-training data. THE TAKEAWAY AI needs news… To make their AI search tools useful, Google and OpenAI need access to accurate and up-to-date info. By negotiating with publishers, they may be trying to avoid legal fallout before copyright lawsuits set a precedent. (By one estimate, The Times may be seeking $450B in damages.) But publishers like News Corp, which cut 1.2K staffers last year, are hoping to get ahead of the AI shift before it gets ahead of them.
