Financial Incentives: The Carrot and the Stick https://lnkd.in/gSc4BHTB I wrote an article a few years back about financial incentives in design. It's been a while, but I think some of the points are still relevant today. Financial incentives can be a powerful tool for influencing user behavior. They can be used to motivate people to take action, complete tasks, and achieve goals. But they can also backfire, leading to people becoming less motivated by the core product. So, how can we rethink about incentives? - Focus on the intrinsic value of the product. What is the product itself worth? What are the benefits that people get from using it? If the product is valuable enough, people will be motivated to use it even without financial incentives. - Use incentives strategically. Incentives can be a great way to get people started with a product or to encourage them to try new features. But they should be used sparingly and not overused. - Be transparent about incentives. People should know how they can earn incentives and what they need to do to get them. This will help to build trust and prevent people from feeling like they are being manipulated. Financial incentives can be a useful tool, but they should be used strategically. By focusing on the intrinsic value of the product and using incentives sparingly, we can create products that people will love and use long-term. Figma for Non-designers - Part 2 Creativity in non-creative tasks So here is a quick glimpse of how Figma helps me work creatively on my non-creative tasks. 1. Organize scattered ideas in one dashboard Figma is capable of organizing a massive amount of information in all forms, including text, images, links, etc. 2. Multiplayer mode Figma allows access to your team or your friend to collaborate on the same board. Free access allows 2 people to have the editable access. However, view-only access can be given to more people. 3. Comments Feature Like Google Docs or any doc, Figma allows the participant to leave a comment at specific spots, making it easier for you to review and make changes. I love it because this way, my work is in its place, and I can digitally brainstorm with my team. 4. Template Creation This helps me a lot with proposals. I can create multiple templates for different scopes by simply dragging and duplicating them.  Tip: If you are not a designer, you may need one-time help from a designer to design proposal templates that you can reuse. 5. Easy Editing Text editing is the easiest. Later I will have posts on how to use the basic tools to start with. 6. Mood board Creation To work on anything creative, use multiple images to create a mood board for yourself. It helps you to stick to the theme you have chosen for your presentation or any doc. 🧘‍♀️ Honest/unfiltered responses on some common things we hear about UX research : 1. Anybody can ask questions - Well yes, like anybody can dance or draw. It's only the matter of quality that varies with practicing and learning the techniques. 2. Qualitative v/s quantitative is always a debate - No, it's not. Both have very different objectives. Please care to read the definition at least. 3. The sample size is very small - I would be happy to debate if you know or at least are open to learn all the sampling techniques and their usage. 4. We tested the product with friends/people in my building/people in the park - Well, I will let the book answer this one.... ( #uxresearch #sampling #userreaserch #justkidding)

I’m noticing a peculiar design related anti-pattern of sorts in the post ZIRP economic environment. It’s where companies have the budget to staff design talent, albeit in lower numbers, but the development budget is so limited that teams are unable to implement the work designers produce. This is the third economic downturn I’ve experienced and we always get pendulum swings. In this one, there seems to be a bias toward austerity and implementing the least expensive solution.

When #UXRunsDry: Bangalore's Cautionary Tale of Unsustainable Urban Planning #Bangalore, once renowned as the "#GardenCity" of India, is now grappling with a severe water crisis that has left its residents high and dry. How did this formerly verdant metropolis reach such a parched state? The answer lies in years of unchecked urban growth without proper planning or foresight into the area's water resources and infrastructure needs. As the city rapidly expanded, fueled by the booming IT industry, water usage skyrocketed while supply dwindled. Basic user experience (UX) principles of understanding human needs and constraints were ignored in favor of unsustainable development. The water crisis represents a catastrophic #UXfailure. Good UX design means meeting the core requirements of the people interacting with a product or service. In this case, the "users" were Bangalore's current and future citizens - and their fundamental need for water access was tragically overlooked by urban planners and developers fixated on expansion at all costs. As Bangalore has realized the hard way, UX isn't just about designing sleek websites or user-friendly apps. At its core, UX is about precisely aligning product and service experiences with what humans need to not just survive, but thrive. From housing to transportation to food systems, #ThoughtfulUX rooted in #HumanCenteredDesign is essential for creating #Sustainable cities and communities. So how could a #UXApproach have helped prevent or mitigate Bangalore's water woes? By including #UXResearchers, designers, and architects from the start, the unique needs and resource constraints of the region could have been carefully studied and incorporated into urban planning. #CrossFunctionalTeams spanning hydrology, civil engineering, urban planning, and other disciplines would collaborate to create holistic solutions balancing growth and water security. Even something as basic as bathrooms and sinks in new construction projects could be approached through a #UXLens - optimizing for water efficiency and uncovering creative ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle on a mass scale. The goal would be urban experiences perfectly tailored to the local environment and populace. Bangalore's struggles show that industries of all kinds can no longer afford to treat UX as a niche specialism reserved just for digital product design. UX thinking must be embedded across all disciplines shaping the human experience, from urban planners to policymakers. Only then can we create products, services and living environments that are truly intuitive, efficient, sustainable and equitable for all. #Designers, #Developers, #BusinessLeaders: As you embark on your next project, keep the city of Bangalore's water crisis in mind. My LinkedIn profile describes me as a successful design leader, but that's not even half of the story. Behind the scenes is a rollercoaster of job rejections, lack of self confidence , financial setbacks, navigating industry switch, balancing college and freelance assignments and countless lessons on professional and interpersonal skills with each year. Learning to be a good manager was totally another feat. The most challenging of it all was seeking an entry into the product design field while studying graphic design from National Institute of Design, two totally different things but here I was, pushing the boundaries! All of these shaped me into who I am today. From self-support to enduring over 15+ interviews in preparation for Product Design opportunity, All I was doing was striving for more. Now I realise nobody has all the answers, even if it may seem that way. So just believe in yourself and put in your best efforts. Pushing ahead is the only key to this game. My advice to anyone starting their career journey is to stay in the present and give your best efforts to achieve what you really believe you can :) #productdesign

Censorship is just one of many ways policing manifests in design and research. 🔹️Designers implement features of surveillance which gather and log personal information, location data, etc. User profiles are often set to automatically opt in without informed consent. 🔹️Developers engineer algorithms that determine what content gets moderated, without transparency in how content moderation decisions are made. 🔹️Researchers gatekeep participant contributions and interpret insights based on what fits their immediate need. Policing is one of 10 dimensions of coloniality in design and research that we will be diving in to at our session on Deconstructing Coloniality in Design and Research. This episode of the Finding Our Way podcast articulates, with such clarity, what’s been on my mind about the value proposition of design as a function. A business could leverage creating a stellar user experience as a strategic lever to succeed in the market, or NOT. The latter is totally acceptable where designers primarily focus on production tasks (like UI designs) in an org that prioritizes churning out features. Yet, it’s a bitter pill to swallow for many designers. They feel disgruntled and get exhausted speaking to the deaf ears about how great an outcome design can bring to the table and how influential they could be outside of Figma. This podcast talks about how many designer leaders are struggling to deal with this reality. As someone who is not in a leadership position, I feel the struggle too. But if I were to stay positive and constructive while prioritizing my mental sanity, these would be some options to consider. - Get hired by a company that REALLY values design (think Airbnb, Linear) - Be extremely good at your craft and find fulfillment in it, regardless of its direct impact on the bottom line—as long as you remain employed 🤷🏻‍♀️ - Elbow your way into cross-functional discussions as much as possible, at least within your team, to find opportunities to demonstrate what you can do outside of Figma. Some of you might know, I have an art practice of sorts. When I say practice, I mean it literally - it's "riyaaz". I usually sketch between tasks - drawing as a way to ease out of one mindset into the other. I think this pen and ink doodle took all of 5 minutes - and it shows! It is also like this with reading. While it is super fulfilling to schedule time to read deeply, life doesn't work like that. Very few have the privilege of owning their own time. The rest of us have to make do with carving out moments. More importantly, this shakes loose the excuse of not having enough time to practice. The busier you are, the more transitions there will be. That's where practice sits, in interludes of 5, 10, 15 minutes. Getting better at drawing or at anything we want is about being consistent - to be able to snatch away a little time to do a little of this or that every day. #practice #consistency #lifegoals #art

Wireframe Wireframes are a low to medium fidelity visual guide that shows the skeletal framework of a website, product or app. They are usually in black and white, and do not have any visual style like type styles, colors or imagery. *Episode 26: Understanding Iterative Design* Design is an iterative process. But what kind of iteration? In the realm of design, here's a common scenario - ❌ Designers often unknowingly fixate on a solution ❌ They become emotionally attached to their ideas, UI, and solutions pushing stakeholders in a single direction ❌ They backtrack to low-fidelity wireframes ❌ They gather feedback and keep making slight adjustments ❌ Then they move to high-fidelity designs ❌ Disagreement from others may upset them But, This is NOT an iterative design process. A skilled designer takes a different path - ✅ They refrain from prematurely settling on a solution. ✅ They maintain emotional detachment from their designs. ✅ They explore multiple concept sketches from varied perspectives. For example, if you are designing a healthcare application, your designs will drastically change if you design it from different perspectives like - patient safety vs data accuracy vs productivity. ✅ They welcome opposing viewpoints without personal offense. ✅ They select the most sensible option or craft a customised solution [as a team]. ✅ They proceed to high-fidelity designs. This genuine iterative process introduces fresh perspectives, potentially uncovering insights that stakeholders hadn't considered. This is how you truly contribute value as a designer. If you've accomplished something like this, make sure to showcase it prominently in your next design interview. 💡 Remember: Iterative design isn't merely about advancing from low to high fidelity.
