Results show that half of the respondents in Arizona prioritize providing a path to citizenship for undocumented individuals who have been in this country for a long time and nearly half (48%) prioritize the same for those under the protection of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, in line with national findings. Almost a third of respondents (30%) also prioritize increasing measures for legal immigration. Respondents had the option to select more than one priority as part of the survey. Beyond providing citizenship, Latino voters also place significant importance on measures related to border security. According to the results, more than 80% of Latino voters in Arizona chose fighting against human and drug trafficking as a priority in terms of border protection. Just over half of respondents (51%) prioritized increasing funding for border security.

Westmont College in California has formally requested and received assurance of their Title IX exemption. That correspondence has been officially published to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights website here: https://lnkd.in/gaYiuQFm https://lnkd.in/gwftUHRJ Here are some of my biggest takeaways. 1) It took ELEVEN MONTHS for the Department of Education to publish correspondence from last May. It's six pages. Now, it's April, and school counselors need this information to help guide students to safe schools and away from dangerous ones. Eleven months. 2) It seems like the Title IX exemption letters now just come out and say openly, we've got this very sad problem about a Title IX investigation claiming we're permitting discrimination and harassment, and we're really tired of the drama so I think it's time for everyone to go home now. "Westmont College respectfully requests that the case be dismissed." 3) They're no longer working hard to align provisions and tenets. They're just saying, generally, Title IX investigations are a whole hassle, and we're super religious. They give a whole range of provisions, some of which don't even apply (e.g. textbooks, or provisions for vocational schools). In 2024, the Title IX exemption is clearly a get out of jail free card for schools like Westmont College and Baylor University. You'll remember that Baylor obtained a historic assurance of Title IX exemption last summer, specifically for the sexual harassment provision. Here's what's really scary. Westmont College has never requested exemption from the sexual harassment provision at the federal level. But, if they want to sidestep a sexual harassment or assault case, they can always claim exemption from that provision at the last minute, just as they requested this recent case be dismissed. Does that sound dramatic? Well, here's how I know Westmont College is ready and thinking about a sexual harassment and assault case. In November 2017, Westmont College submitted a state-level exemption letter to the California Student Aid Commission in order to make sure they didn't have to adhere to the pesky California Equity in Higher Education Act. In that letter, they claim not just exemption to the state law, but also to Title IX, and, they specifically wrote "Policy and Practices on Unlawful Discrimination, Unlawful Harassment, and Sexual Assault." https://lnkd.in/gPXJuuyF ^P. 25 Since 2017, Westmont College put it in writing that they are anticipating the sexual harassment and assault of LGBTQ+ students on their campus. "In California, SNAP is known as CalFresh and despite policies and communication to improve college students' access to CalFresh, participation remains low, with approximately 78% of those eligible not receiving benefits," Suzanna M. Martinez, associate professor in the University of California, San Francisco Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics shares about her latest study in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior on barriers college students face when enrolling in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Modifying the Farm Bill could reduce barriers to SNAP for students and improve nutrition. "Based on our study findings, eliminating the extra requirements for college students to qualify for SNAP would go a long way in ensuring that more eligible students get the support they need to meet their basic food needs," shares Lorrene Ritchie, director of the UCANR Nutrition Policy Institute. We are thrilled to announce that Bargas has been selected for a case study in the Executive MBA course, "Managerial Accounting for Executives," at California State University-Sacramento. Students Gade Hamilton and Richard Singh will be designing a Balanced Scorecard and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for this project. Their enthusiasm for working with Bargas inspired them to create special Team Bargas shirts! We extend our heartfelt congratulations to both Gade and Richard on their upcoming graduation from the program this July! Fun fact: T-Rex has a balanced scorecard. 1. Financial Perspective (Survival and Growth): Objective: Maximize energy intake and minimize energy expenditure. Measures: Number of successful hunts vs. failed attempts, ratio of energy gained from food to energy spent hunting. 2. Customer Perspective (Prey and Competitors): Objective: Become a more effective predator. Measures: Satisfaction level of the ecosystem (balance of the food chain), fear index of prey animals, respect from other predators. 3. Internal Process Perspective (Hunting Skills and Territory Management): Objective: Optimize hunting strategies and territory control. Measures: Efficiency of hunting methods (ambush vs. pursuit), effectiveness of territory patrols, and defense against rivals. 4. Learning and Growth Perspective (Adaptation and Evolution): Objective: Improve adaptability and evolve over time. Measures: Rate of learning new hunting techniques, adaptation to environmental changes, genetic variations leading to potential evolution. For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students examined cities that have passed vacancy taxes and similar legislation to develop policies that can make the best use of vacant buildings in Los Angeles. Students researched what could be done with these properties, and how a vacancy tax impacts property owners, the housing market, and housing availability. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Los Angeles Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky. Adrianna Urmersbach, a junior majoring in Latin American Studies, said, "After conducting extensive research on the housing crisis for Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, I learned that disadvantages could work as blessings in disguise. Battling my own ADHD can make schooling extremely difficult, but through my work with the Councilwoman, I learned that my condition gifted me with endless curiosity. The housing crisis piqued my interest and my brain worked overtime with questions and ideas, making my research personal, fulfilling, and holistic. The experience helped me realize that obstacles and inhibitions caused by special conditions can work as unique skill sets for unique opportunities." When Is A Strike Legal? And Who Gets To Decide? UC's 'Stand-Up' Strikes Offer A Case Study As academic workers at UCLA and UC Davis prepare to join UAW 4811’s “stand-up” strike next week, UC officials maintain that the work stoppage is illegal, pointing to “no strike” clauses in the union’s contracts. The agency tasked with determining whether the strike is unlawful, however, says that hasn’t been settled. Why it matters: UAW 4811 represents 48,000 academic workers throughout the UC system. They conduct research, teach, and grade student work. The work stoppages have the potential to cause major disruptions, particularly if all 10 campuses go on strike. And: If the strike is ruled illegal, there could be major penalties to workers. Why now: The union has filed multiple unfair labor practice charges against UC, arguing that the system violated workers’ rights when deploying police to dismantle encampments. What do the protests have to do with working conditions? The academic workers are demanding workplace-related changes, including the right to opt out of military-funded research. The union alleges that UC retaliated against employees for engaging in actions related to working conditions.
