The Sports Franchise Index offers a comprehensive and transparent measure of the financial and operational health of sports franchises. If you look at some of investment moves by FAs, the sports asset class is still a hidden gem. The majority still look at team ownership, but more and more folks are getting exposed to alts in sports in tech, media, sports betting, e-sports, and athlete mgmt. The kicker here- the vast majority, like… almost all, are at the accredited investor level. The interesting thing about this- the non accredited investors are those paying into sport on a daily basis. Buying tickets, paying for thier kids to be in sports, maybe paying into thier own rec league… Yet no meaningful ownership in sport itself. Frankly… probably not even knowing how to own in alts and the sports asset class. If only there was a fund to change and manage all that. 😉 Alts for all! Champion Venture Partners

Well look at that! SBJ is finally coming around to the opportunity sports DTC streaming can provide teams/leagues. The bottom line, is that as viewing habits continue to shift towards digital platforms and devices, sports entities with built in fan bases and star athletes can exploit DTC streaming: 👉 A DTC approach allows for direct relationship with fans. Teams can personalize the communication, target marketing and tailor offerings to fans to increase engagement and revenue. 👉 A DTC model will be able to better to measure advertisement spending with viewership numbers and post-advertisement behavior. This allows teams to target marketing efforts and to make investment decisions more wisely. 👉 DTC sports streaming can utilize data and algorithms to create a more immersive and engaging viewing experience and allows fans to enjoy live and on-demand sports content at their convenience. 👉 DTC models are likely to be less lucrative [than current RSN rights fees] at the outset, but allows teams to be in control of their own fortunes and to maximize revenue and fan engagement in meaningful ways that are more sustainable for the long-term health of the franchise. Sports continues to be a market showing outsized growth potential, most recently forecast to hit $678B by 2028, growing 11% annually. FanDuel's dominance over the mobile sports betting market in Virginia was cemented in April. The top sportsbook hit yet another record when its total revenue surpassed $700 million. FanDuel continues to dominate the market, according to data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request to the Virginia Lottery. The company's performance metrics are impressive. In April, Virginia's gross sports betting revenue was $60 million, which was only the fourth time in 40 months of wagering records that this amount was reached. Over 50% of the total, or an astounding $31.2 million, came from FanDuel alone. A misunderstanding around “sports” is that it is 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘦 of an industry... It's because “sports tech” is taken too literally. There are two ways to look at it: ❶ 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 ─ technology geared just for sports ❷ 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 ─ everything in & around the industry (all technology + teams, leagues, events, agencies, sportainment, fitness, documentaries, wellness, esports...etc) And it gets even larger as you start to 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 into media, entertainment, culture, and the creator economy. ──────── Even what are presumed to be smaller niches within sports have led to huge exits for the companies that dominated in market share: 📹 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘀. Can’t be that big, right? Over 5 companies valued at hundreds of millions of dollars competing for market share globally. 🎮 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀…too small of a sport, right? Nope. Drone Racing League was recently acquired for $250M. 🖥️ 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 for amateur sports…multiple big players with huge acquisitions/PE buyouts including TeamSnap and SportsEngine. 🏟️ 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀. The PFL was born at the peak of the UFC, and in only 6 years has created a product that now rivals it in talent + viewership. 📱𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 for sports properties…now nearly a $1B company in WSC Sports. 🎾 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 can’t be a big market, right? This article from The Washington Post editorial board is pretty embarrassing. #AI is going to play a role in #sportsbetting, for good and for bad, but they're citing nonsense like a website claiming "some AI tools can predict sports with 80% or 90% accuracy." The sports industry spans across a variety of subsets and markets, including sports management, sportstech, and the fast-growing sports betting industry. These organizations have long been a staple in North America. But a recent development amongst this landscape has been the influx of private equity interest and investment. The potential of adjacent markets these firms can access has still not been fully realized as investors scan the vast environment for opportunity. The ESPN article linked below in the comments section explores the potential change in regulations within the National Football League (NFL) to allow private equity investors to purchase ownership stakes of their franchises. It remains to be seen what the outcome will be in the case of the NFL, but the reality is that the profitable organizations within the sports industry will see continued interest from private equity investors.
