Function wants to reimagine healthcare. The preventative diagnostics platform closed a Series A investment led by a16z Bio + Health, bringing its total funding to $53M. Co-founded by functional medicine expert Mark Hyman, MD, the company leverages robust lab testing to improve longevity and healthspan. Taking a proactive approach, twice-annual 100-biomarker panels are reviewed by AI and human clinicians to spot and treat disease. Members can also opt for additional tests as needed. Operating in beta since April, Function Health counts 50K paying customers, a 200K person waitlist, and recently partnered with Equinox. Losing faith in traditional healthcare, more people are seeking preventative scans, alternative medicine, and longevity protocols. Democratizing diagnostics, Function wants to prioritize health over healthcare.

Harvey Castro, MD, MBA. - If interested, I wrote an article some time back that suggests the use of wearables, smart devices, AI etc. to monitor cumulative stress. I started on a mock-up as you can see in the article. Hope this helps someone. Keep up the good work Harvey. Also, somewhere in my writing/posting/commenting I suggested to doctors who were becoming burned out - "If you had a patient with these stress symptoms, what would you advise them?" - Physician, heal thyself. ✍️ A new essay: "For an Unremarkable Health System" 🏃🏼 We often celebrate remarkable achievements in healthcare — hospitals excelling on certain metrics or clinicians winning prestigious awards. But what if we shifted our focus to pursuing an “unremarkable” healthcare system instead? I examine this thesis in a new essay for Healthcare Quarterly. 🚶🏼 An unremarkable system performs consistently well across all indicators that matter to patients, without major deviations. It delivers “decent enough” results deserving of careful monitoring, but nothing remarkable that raises concerns. Rather than chasing a few standout metrics, an unremarkable system provides a balanced, holistic experience for patients across the care continuum. It seeks to maximize health and welfare for everyone by lifting all boats through quality improvement. Unremarkability requires a culture change from our tendency to seek to outclass peers. You have to admit that the headline "Digital health resilience leads to brilliance" by Rock Health is a bit cheesy but when you look at the amount raised and number of deals, the future sounds more optimistic in H1 of 2024 than in the H1 of 2023. If you look at the Leading Value Propositions and Clinical Indications table you can see a #1 Treatment of disease at $1.1B. In the Clinical Indications the top 4 investments are in #mentalhealth, #cardiovascular, #oncology and #weightmanagement & #obesity. The upcoming trend of Food-as-Medicine or Food Care shows strength with $200M investment in Foodsmart. "The digital health sector continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Funding momentum (especially at the early stage) and the tapering of transition measures like unlabeled rounds hint that we might be returning to more “normal,” sustainable venture patterns." Can fertility clinics keep up with the demand for their services while maintaining quality? I have real concerns about this for a few reasons: 1. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 167,689 cycles to freeze eggs and embryos in the United States in 2021, nearly double the number in 2017. 2. In recent years, private equity firms have purchased many fertility clinics, which has led to the creation of more chains and an increased emphasis on profitability. 3. We assume that privately owned fertility clinics are regulated the same as other areas of healthcare, but they aren't. 4. I am married to a brilliant engineer whose company installs alarm systems for critical things like cancer drugs, research materials, and more. From our evening debriefs about the day, I know that the alarm systems are only as good as the people who respond to them. Ignoring them or other user errors, like unplugging critical equipment that keeps them functional, can lead to a catastrophic loss like what happened at Pacific Fertility Center in 2018. I do not mean to suggest that fertility clinics are not doing great work and serving a need - they are. But that need is growing at an alarming rate, and we must be clear on the limitations of fertility clinic interventions. My take? We need to integrate the best solutions for supporting optimal fertility, not necessarily more regulation. Allopathic care for medical issues (i.e. treating the symptom and not the root cause) is the standard approach and it's not enough when it comes to #infertility. https://lnkd.in/dsVQjqnP

This article by the WSJ is critically important for public health officials and HealthTech entrepreneurs to internalize. We need multiple solutions for patients to move towards post GLP-1 usage. These solutions need to be easy to implement, non-disruptive to daily life and focused on caloric restriction , lifestyle change and muscle gain. Too many startups are still focused on GLP-1 prescription and delivery. Not enough people focused on the next stage of the weight management journey. As the Journal states, the benefits of the GLP-1 craze are only going to be successful long term if the transition off of them is successful. What is it like to witness a health tech startup grow from seed stage to a $72M Series C? I joined Two Chairs as a founding team member in 2017. We had no clinic, no clinicians, and no clients. Just 4 people in a co-working space dreaming big. Not all mental health tech companies are made equal. This one was made different. My key takeaways from 3 days of learning with Lasa Health during the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps kickoff: ✅ A strong #valueproposition is crucial for selling your #healthtech product. Your ideal target customer doesn’t really care about the technical details of your product: they want to hear about the outcomes they can achieve by using it. 😫 Your product’s value prop must address key customer pain points. Focus on critical problems that lack existing solutions: this will make your solution irresistible to prospective clients. 😵‍💫 Don’t marry your ideas or your tech. If your current solution doesn’t resonate with your ideal customers, be ready to pivot and adapt based on customer feedback. 👂🏾Never assume you know what your customer is thinking. No matter how well you think you know what they are going to say, they’ll often surprise you. Listen carefully and avoid making assumptions.
