  • Zaria's Gate

Zaria blames herself for her younger sister Jayden’s murder – after all, Zaria is the one who opened the door and let Death walk into their living room.

But no one can escape their Reaping Day, a fact Zaria begrudgingly accepts as Death glides the suffocating helmet onto Jayden’s head. Zaria is left to watch helplessly as Jayden closes her eyes and sinks into the couch, her body going forever still, her consciousness lost in a virtual “afterlife” of her own making.

Zaria knows the promise of an afterlife is a lie, a cruel incentive meant to justify the Reaping Program’s twisted mode of population control. Her quest to expose the truth, however, is derailed when strange dreams force her to reconsider everything she believes in – including reality itself.

Driven by her dreams and with help from an eccentric Reaping Corps official and his even more mysterious friend, Zaria sets out on an impossible search for Jayden and the truth. It’s a journey that threatens to kill her at every turn, whether from the execution team tracking her, the unforgiving desert terrain consuming her, or from the bizarre visions that are slowly tearing her apart.

Yet the future is bright. For where there is journalism, there is hope." Former newspaper journalist and professional new media consultant Gary Goldhammer pulls from his years of blog writing to analyze the decline of newspapers -- and in doing so finds the bright spots where news, and storytelling, will thrive in the new decade. The Last Newspaper is a mix of true stories, anecdotes, humor and longing for a time in journalism not completely gone, yet perhaps disappearing too soon.
