On the bright side, their approved proposal marks a milestone: 1,400 MW of new gas and oil-fired generation is poised to bolster the reliability of Georgia's energy grid amidst twofold customer growth. 🌱🔌 Yet, this step is not without its drawbacks. Environmental advocates voice their unease, spotlighting the plan's heavy lean on fossil fuels and looming rate hikes for consumers. 🏭💰 The balance, however, teeters towards innovation. The green light for three new units at Plant Yates and a 750 MW power purchase, carries a hefty $3 billion tab, yet Georgia Power's commitment to distributed energy resources and solar and battery technology pilots heralds a sustainable pivot. PJM Interconnection deems an 800-MW battery unrealistic for replacing Talen Energy’s 1,280-MW Brandon Shores coal plant, citing timing and reliability issues. The plant's retirement would cause major grid reliability problems, which would be best addressed by an investment of $796 million in new transmission projects, which are expected to be completed by 2028. "...the average plant takes three to four years to build and new energy transmission power lines take three to six years to connect everything together." Does it have to take this long? What if we think out-of-the-box? What if we allowed entrepreneurs to start independent and unregulated utilities? Eliminating state electricity regulation might speed things up by a couple of years for those utilities while the competition for customers would bring forth all sorts of innovations that we can't even imagine today. "We continue to progress large-scale batteries under development at Eraring and Mortlake power stations," Origin Energy CEO, Frank Calabria said in a recent news story on Yahoo! Finance, looking at what Origin Energy is doing with its power stations and its transition to renewable energy. It’s great to see Origin’s deepening investments in renewable generation. As the story highlights, Origin recently signed an agreement with Yanco Delta, which will be capable of powering more than 750,000 households and displace 4.5 million tonnes of emissions each year by displacing coal generation. With the right mix of renewables and the right long-term storage supporting them, Australia’s future in low-cost, sustainable energy generation and consumption is bright. Powering Up Wyoming was thrilled to participate in the third annual Wyoming Energy Authority Energy Summit, featuring speakers and panelists from every energy sector across Wyoming, showcasing the powerhouse of energy production and innovation the Equality State is and how the state can support future projects and remain competitive across all areas. During the Energy Summit, PUW led a panel discussion titled “Working Together, Renewables in Wyoming,” with panelists Ryan Fitzpatrick from NextEra Energy, Rawlins Mayor Terry Weickum, and David Fuller from Power Company of Wyoming. Panelists highlighted the billions of dollars of investment in renewable projects and hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue going directly to the state and local communities. Mayor Terry Weickum discussed how, without these taxes, Carbon County towns would not have been able to purchase critical needs such as ambulances and police vehicles. Competition with surrounding states was a discussion point. David Fuller emphasized how, when competing with our neighboring states, we are usually “pennies apart” from securing future projects whose investment and taxes provide critical revenue to our towns and counties. During this legislative interim, there will be discussions on generation tax and other renewable energy related policies. As Wyoming leaders continue to discuss this issue, we must recognize that remaining competitive is essential to keeping and attracting businesses to our state. Businesses and industries need certainty; we cannot afford to lose major investments and revenue to our neighboring states. Would new and additional energy and operating reserve market incentives for flexibility be enough or even relevant for SMRs? Fixed payments would help fix many fixed cost recovery problems. Ban on #naturalgas in federal buildings which means an increase in electric use from an inefficient grid. #increasedemissions Why not install a solution that uses natural gas already supplied to the building, will reduce carbon emissions and reduce grid reliance. Cleanleaf Energy Secures O&M Contracts for 350 MW Solar Projects in Georgia and Pennsylvania Cleanleaf Energy, previously known as Borrego O&M, has announced new agreements to provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for utility-scale solar projects totaling 350 MW in Georgia and Pennsylvania. These projects, owned by Heelstone Renewable Energy, include four sites in Georgia and one in Pennsylvania. Heelstone Renewable Energy, established in 2012 with initial projects in North Carolina, expanded into California by 2016. In 2019, Heelstone received an investment from Ares Infrastructure and Power to support its utility-scale solar projects across the United States.
