The countdown has started! Many leaders working for Centra know the meaning of the words "Compensation Overhaul". It is a roadmap that started in the Fall 2022 and will culminate in pay equity and market adjustments in May 2024. The work is guided by these principles: 1.    Planning. 2.    Clarity through transparency. 3.    Process Consistency. 4.    Fairness. 5.    Purpose. 6.    Pay equity. 7.    Leadership accountability. Thanks to organization-wide support for the work, HR has created a compensation program and capability that will be a game changer for Centra's workforce and culture. Centra has implement standard pay structures and policies, clear criteria for promotion, and standardized documentation of compensation to minimize room for bias. Communicating clearly about pay equity is nearly 13 times as important for employee retention and engagement as talking about “high levels of pay and benefits,” according to a March 14 report from The Josh Bersin Co., a human capital advisory firm. "While most companies know they must increase pay during times of inflation, they do not understand the problems they create when people feel the system is unfair,” Josh Bersin said. Nobody said it was going to be easy. Headspace has come out with their new Workforce Trends Report and the results just might surprise you. Of all the workers surveyed, 77% said that work stress had negatively impacted their health, 71% said work stress had caused a relationship to end for them, and 40% said work had caused mental health issues. More employees reported that leaders in their organizations had talked about mental health. This year 89% said they had conversations at work about mental health, up from 35% in 2020. HR leaders and managers are the ones on the frontlines of the mental health crisis in the workplace. Workplace leaders must show support to employees, offering them access to quality, comprehensive programs to help and benefit their mental health. #HRStrategies #MentalHealth #WorkplaceStress #StressAwarenessMonth

Does the SHRM policy shift to remove Equity from its Diversity and Inclusion strategy matter? I'd be interested in your thoughts. As for me? Absolutely. Equity is where HR has the most opportunity and responsibility within a company. It could be defined as the fair treatment, access and advancement for each person in an organization. For the largest HR organization in the U.S. to diminish its importance is baffling, political, and short-sighted. HR can champion and influence initiatives in diversity and inclusion, but the accountability for organizational adherence does not lie within the sole responsibility of HR. Structures, policies and resources for equitable treatment do, and should be elevated in importance for any HR professional, not to mention SHRM. Want to dive deeper on workplace equity? A third of Americans making over $200k live paycheck to paycheck. I talk to HR leaders every day, and that stat catches some of them by surprise.  There are a variety of reasons for this dilemma, but a recent episode from the Wall Street Journal podcast breaks down a big reason why more employees than ever find themselves in a jam. For your employees, the cost of owning a home is going up 🏡📈 The Journal breaks down a few key costs that keep your hardworking employees – even some of your best savers – guessing.  The WSJ unpacks the facts for us in their podcast (link in the comments) titled “Think It’s Expensive to Buy a Home? Try Owning One.” Here’s a recap on what’s throwing your employees off balance: 1️⃣ Everyone knows buying a home is expensive these days. Bidding wars, interest hikes, and other factors are stretching people to their limits as they chase the American dream. 2️⃣ Home maintenance costs more. On average, it costs $6,600 a year to maintain a home. Some of those costs aren’t just unexpected, they’re also up 8% this year, according to data. 3️⃣ Property taxes average $4,062 this year, and that’s 4% above what homeowners were previously budgeting.  That number won’t be going down anytime soon as local and state governments contend with their own cost increases and demands for services. 4️⃣ Lastly, the big one: is homeowners insurance.  That thing you have to have, but never hope to need…. That’s up 20-60% across the country, as insurers grapple with rising claims and costs of repairs. Interesting world of SHRM and HR. HR is having an existential crisis right now...and it's about time! Does it feel like the entire world might be in crisis? Perhpas. The world of work is evolving rapidly, (talk to me about AI) and HR needs to evolve with it. We're at a crossroads where modern HR is challenging traditional HR. People Operations comes swooping in to shake things up as well! 💣 SHRM announced they are removing the 'E' for equity in DEIB efforts. 💣 Last week, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP was raked through the coals for his keynote speech at the SHRM conference (as he should have been). BUT... sounds like this has been happening for years and frankly, it needs to end now.
