My thoughts on WGU's CS/IA Bachelor's degree content and certifications as it relates to "You don't need a degree", entry level requirements, cost of the degree and my overall impression of what I learned compared to what I already knew. Keep in mind I was in the field before I started my degree and these are just my opinions. "You don't need a degree" - While I still don't necessarily disagree with this statement, the way the market is in the US for entry level candidates, those without a degree are behind the curve, at least on paper. Entry level requirements - Again, I really don't think a degree is needed for entry level, but with how many people are competing for entry level roles, it isn't going to hurt you to have a degree when your competition may not have one. Cost - WGU is vastly cheaper than other degrees, and one of the best things about WGU. You can take more classes per term and NOT get charged extra. With rising education costs, especially if you're self funding said degree, save where you can when possible. Overall impression and random other bits - I transferred in 39 credits between previous college education and a few certifications. I finished 83 credits in 2 years and 3 months or so. I don't think this would be doable at most other schools. If you have the time, you can smash through as many classes as possible in 6 months, because this is how long their terms are. Industry certifications - You get a multitude of baseline certs and 3 or so advanced level certs - all included in your tuition cost. If you're planning on doing a degree and certs, why not WGU? Industry knowledge - I actually feel like quite a bit of the content in the BSCSIA is solid, maybe a bit dated, but it is impossible for any degree to keep up with changing knowledge requirements. I do think some things could be changed, but that is up to the school and they can only change so much per semester. Don't know what career path you want to go in to? One of the good things about this degree path is you'll learn more than just the offensive and defensive side of things, so if you're struggling to decide, this at least gives an idea of what each career does outside of reading job descriptions and trying to determine what that job actually does. Final thoughts after a wall of text - I still think the way in is networking, followed by a homelab and blogging on top of certifications and a degree, but if you're focused on getting certs and a degree before starting those other two I mentioned, this degree will give you both.

Graduation is just four days away now and today we introduce another May 2024 graduate, Ryan Martinez. Ryan is on the job hunt and hopes to find a position as a business or systems analyst or an entry-level cybersecurity position and hopes that he can travel often. If you have an open position please reach out to Ryan. The advice Ryan has for new first-year students is, "Get to know the professors. That’s something I wish I had done more. Every single one of the professors are great and getting to know them will help with things like asking questions or just being more involved in the class." Ryan is most proud of, "I wish I had come here all four years. I am a transfer students so I was only able to spend my last 2 years here. However one of the things I am most proud of would be my personal development and how that has strongly transformed my professional development." We asked all graduates who had the greatest impact on their career he said, "Nick Eckhardt had a very important impact on me and my time at app. Someone I can call a mentor and is one of the reasons I am a CIS student. I used to be a Computer Science major but quickly realized it wasn’t for me. I talked with him and the AppState program and instantly knew that CIS was for me. Nick states that CIS 3880- Ethical Hacking with Dr. Russell Haines was his favorite CIS course. "Being able to practice what is being preached is something I really value and with this class, it is nonstop figuring new things out." Nick says his best memory while in Boone was, "My best memories are the friends I have made along the way." Join us in celebrating Mr. Ryan Martinez and the Class of 2024. 🌟 Just a reminder to take those phishing webinars seriously! Recently, I reached out to some recruiters and shared my resume for potential opportunities. I got a response from someone who seemed legitimate, with a lot of followers and positive comments. They sent me a link to a position. To be cautious, I checked my email separately, did a reverse lookup on the phone number, and contacted the actual company to verify the recruiter's identity. The position wasn't listed on their site, which was a major red flag. Turns out, it was a scam! #headache #tiring Job searching is challenging enough without having to weed out scams. Always take extra steps to verify and protect yourself. Stay vigilant!

This weekend I was thinking about my experiences at the RH-ISAC Intelligence Summit, a Team8 event at the Deloitte office in Charlotte, my interactions with peers in Cybersecurity, and the maturity of Cybersecurity individuals/teams/programs. What takes things to the "next level" in Cybersecurity? The more I think about it the more I keep coming back to "empathy." The best people I've met in Cybersecurity have a tremendous capacity for empathy. Empathy for: -Users (all members of your company) -Customers (B2B/B2C) -Investors (in whatever form they may be) -Threat actors (yes, even threat actors) Unless you can put yourself in THEIR shoes and FEEL their pain and motivation you can't understand the problems and persevere through the challenges. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to incorporate this more into my work and have a few ideas. Curious for your thoughts if you're willing to share.

Today I was accepted into the Order of the Sword and Shield National Honor Society (Omicron Sigma Sigma). The Order of the Sword & Shield National Honor Society is recognized as the largest organization representing Homeland Security, Intelligence, Emergency Management, Cyber, Information Security, and all Protective Security disciplines. It is distinguished as the honor society encompassing the complete spectrum of the homeland security mission. One more class to go before completing the Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance degree program at Western Governors University.
