I worked to ensure that the religious services at the BCC could be live-streamed to a global audience. Part of the work was juggling the software, hardware and installation of the system; and part was training the staff at BCC in how to use the gear.

As the demand for great design increases, there are more and more opportunities for UX Designers. Only problem: the job description, the day-to-day duties, and the deliverables for UX Designers are all very much in flux. This has led to a real breakdown in the hiring process. Employers find that they are spammed with unqualified candidates; or that the people they do hire turn out not to have the skills that were claimed on the resume. Meanwhile, talented designers & webgeeks are finding that their careers depend more on how well they can write a resume, rather than do the work.
My gig as the Director of Professional Development is to try to identify where these breakdowns are taking place, and to try to come up with some kind of industry-wide standardization to help everyone know that "the contents of the package match what is on the label."
Wish me luck. -

I've helped write grant applications, set up analytics and tracking for the website, edited reports and designed publications, shot and edited video for online courses, and taught seminars in Peru.
It's been an amazing ride.
During this time, SembraMedia has raised more than $3 million in funds from the grants I've co-written, and grown from a team of 2 part-timers to a staff of more than 25, headquartered in Buenos Aires. We've launched an online school, discovered and cataloged more than 800 entrepreneurial media sites, and helped countless journalists & activists learn how to build sustainable online businesses.

Designing Data Visualizations

Data Visualization Designer is one of the hottest new careers in tech because organizations around the world are drowning in all the “Big Data” they’re generating. Data Visualization Designer is one of the hottest new careers in tech because organizations around the world are drowning in all the “Big Data” they’re generating. They need people with the skills to turn raw facts and figures into visualizations that tell a story and make an impact. In this course, Designing Data Visualizations, you'll learn how to use your creativity and intuition to find the insights in datasets, as well as basic data-analysis techniques, to create “enriched” data and choose the correct visual to communicate real meaning. First, you’ll see how to spot “signals” in the data – it turns out that human common sense and knowledge of context are not only still relevant, but absolutely crucial. Then, you’ll learn techniques like pivot tables, conditional formatting, and data joins and merges to generate clear insights, while avoiding the “Four Deadly Sins of Data Visualization.” Finally, you’ll explore what kinds of visualizations match up best with what the data is telling you. When you’re finished with this course, you'll understand how to look inside the data, pull out what your audience needs and is most interested in, and use that to design data visualizations that stick.

In this course, Using Predictive Analytics to Improve the Customer Journey, you'll learn how to address this problem by harnessing Big Data in a way that leads to real-world benefits. First, you'll learn what predictive customer analytics are, how they are generated, and why they are valuable for making sure your products, customer experience, and websites don’t fall behind. Next, you’ll explore how to use customer journey mapping to spot hidden opportunities (as well as “pain points”) that need to be addressed. Finally, you’ll meld predictive analytics with journey mapping to reveal how you can improve your products and increase customer satisfaction. At the end of this course, you not only will be able to build data-informed visualizations that improve UX and boost sales, but you’ll also gain insights that will help you better manage teams comprised of both data geeks and design nerds.

To conduct this research, SembraMedia, with the support of Omidyar Network, commissioned a team to study 100 digital news startups, 25 each in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
Many of the researchers were entrepreneurial journalists themselves, and they brought personal connections and a deep understanding of the media in their countries. In 2-hour interviews with founders or directors, they asked more than 130 questions about management and innovation, challenges and opportunities, audience size and engagement, income and expenses.
This report is aimed at helping the founders of digital media startups better understand the trends, threats, and best practices that affect them. It is also designed to help investors, foundations, and journalism organizations to appreciate the value, vulnerability, and impact of this fast-growing media ecosystem. Although we cannot share their proprietary data, we’ve included our top-level findings in this report. -

Social Media Design for Dummies
Wiley Publishing
Now that pretty much everyone has a social media presence of one kind or another (i.e. the "Hey! My grandma's on Facebook!" effect), people are realizing that having a great-looking profile is a real advantage. This book helps you craft eye-catching profile pages on every major social media network (well, aside from the one that you're on at the moment - LinkedIn is still kinda blind to the power of design).

iPhone & iPad Web Design for Dummies
Wiley Publishing
Apple’s touchscreen iOS devices have created worldwide techno-lust, and a hot new market out of thin air. iPads and iPhones are so in demand they outsell every other device in their category.
With all the focus on the App Store (due to the ubiquitous “There’s an App for that…” ad campaign), you could be forgiven for overlooking the fact that the single most popular app on the iPhone/iPad is Safari. That’s right. The humble web browser.Other authorsSee publication -

What attracted me most to this project was that right from the get-go, my marching orders were: “No more views from 30,000 feet.” No more broad generalizations about the mythical powers of crowdsourced hyperlocal converged innovation – with a social media twist.
Instead, the Audience Planbook was created to be a practical tool – well, as practical as we could make it. If we could have come up with a list of “press this button, lip this switch, yank this lever and money comes out”…What attracted me most to this project was that right from the get-go, my marching orders were: “No more views from 30,000 feet.” No more broad generalizations about the mythical powers of crowdsourced hyperlocal converged innovation – with a social media twist.
Instead, the Audience Planbook was created to be a practical tool – well, as practical as we could make it. If we could have come up with a list of “press this button, lip this switch, yank this lever and money comes out” steps that would transform the newspaper industry – we probably would have charged a lot more for the report.Other creatorsSee project
