Subject matter expert (SME) interviews are invaluable for creating rich, engaging CME content. But they can also present some obstacles. In a recent WriteCME Pro group coaching session, we workshopped the common challenges medical writers face when conducting SME interviews. These challenges include: ➡️ Staying on track: SMEs may go off-topic. ➡️ Ego: Some SMEs may be challenging to direct or have strong personalities. ➡️ Alignment with client expectations: SME responses may not always match the client's vision for the content. You’d be well served by a copyeditor, someone who can save you from looking illiterate, and a proofreader. If or when the various tasks become overwhelming, you may look for assistance from assisted self-publishing companies. This kind of company typically offers a range of services, including editing, cover design, formatting, eBook conversion, printing, distribution, and marketing assistance, which are mostly pick-and-choose menu items. These companies will let you pick as many or as few menu items as you wish. They do not evaluate your manuscript for “readiness,” ..that’s 100% on you! As a coach, I don't work with assessments like Extended DISC or Insights Discovery. When my clients present themselves as a 'red person' or 'green person,' I believe them and wish them all the best in expanding their possibilities to deal with what life throws at them in red, green, blue, crimson, and golden ways. However, there is one reflective practice that I love to suggest, and that is The Saboteur Assessment created by Shirzad Chamine. Why this one of all the popular tests? Because it helps my clients see through the strategies they use to protect themselves. I love to surprise my clients by changing their perspectives, turning enemies into allies, resistance into a driving force, shortages into resources, and obstacles into THE WAY. Once you know who's talking in your head, you can start negotiating. Writing Tip - "STOP!" Punctuation and white space tell readers when to SLOW DOWN and also when to STOP READING. When you think about it like YOU’RE AN ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR speeding and slowing the tempo of your writing then punctuation is actually fun. These little marks give your reader a break and slow them down WITHIN YOUR SENTENCES: ! (exclamation mark) . (period/end stop) , (comma)   - (hyphen) – (emdash)   ; (semicolon) : (colon) … (ellipse) The WHITE SPACE above and below PARAGRAPHS allows your reader to pause briefly which, adds to their comfortable reading pace. Dividing paragraphs into CHAPTERS provides longer pauses. Your reader will appreciate those longer breaks. Also, consider segmenting a bunch of chapters into PARTS (as in, Part 1, 2, 3). And, If YOU are overwhelmed by the amount of content in your book, your readers will feel overloaded and need a natural stopping point - that’s where TRILOGIES and BOOK SETS are necessary.
