Or do you?... - We present the first comprehensive map of the Omics Solution Provider landscape - As biology advances exponentially, new multi-omic technologies to read, write, and edit cells (genome, proteome, metabolome, or epigenome) emerge every week, rapidly increasing the level of complexity. Techniques that would have made the cover of Nature Biotech ten years ago are now standard in experimental protocols. Skills that once required an entire PhD and postdoc to master are now routinely expected from a first-year research associate. How are we supposed to keep exploring the farthest boundaries of biological possibilities if even the most basic discoveries depend on such complex and rapidly changing multi-omic technologies? Enter biological solutions providers. They play a crucial role in transforming cutting-edge biology into accessible solutions by abstracting these complex but essential tools into services, kits, or instruments. Within Omics, solution providers usually focus on genomics, proteomics, multi-omics, single-cell, or spatial biology. Whether it's a $100 whole genome sequencing, a detailed mapping of the spatial epigenome at single-cell resolution, the sequencing of a million cells simultaneously, or high-throughput cloning of plasmids into bacteria—impossible feats a decade ago—can now be accomplished in just a few hours with the help of Ultima Genomics, AtlasXomics, Fluent Biosciences, or Seqwell, respectively. We wanted to break down the Omics Solution Provider space into a digestible format that anyone can understand. Through numerous conversations with researchers, scientists, academics, and customers, we sought to create a market map. This means scientists can focus on the important stuff while robots take care of the rest!   Making Smart Decisions: AI can even make decisions on its own! It uses fancy algorithms to figure out the best way to make the medicine, so it's always top quality.   Sorting Out the Data: There's a lot of information to keep track of when making medicine. Turns out most modern generative algorithms are pretty good and can help chemists if paired with good models for activity and ADMET! Highlights: 🤖 Claude, a large language model, appears to be an ok molecule generator ✍️ Classic medicinal chemistry driven approaches are competitive against more modern AI driven approaches such as #REINVENT 👏 All algorithms are good at scaffold hopping, i.e. generating molecules that are very different from original ones! 🧑‍💼 The Business of Biotech (1st Edition): Patents… The Lifeblood of Biotech 📜A strong patent portfolio is everything in biotech. What makes a patent portfolio stalwart, and how does this affect company valuations? 🛡️ A Defensible Moat Intellectual property (e.g. patents) is the foundation from which all innovations are built upon. Patent protection is what guarantees that a novel invention cannot be easily duplicated by competitors, securing the market exclusivity of the technology once it is ready for consumer purchase. Patents create financial incentives for developing new technologies, and institutional investors (e.g. Big Pharma and venture capital) analyze the strength of an IP portfolio when making acquisition or investment decisions. Without patents, the “upside” of innovating is completely destroyed, and humanity seeks to evolve technologically. A strong patent portfolio and strategy to build a defensible “moat” around drug assets is crucial in biotech. Not only to protect the future revenues of a drug that is still in the development and may not see commercial success until 5-10 years down the road, but also to secure a flow of capital to fund current development. Patents can broadly be classed into 3 categories: composition of matter, methods of use, and process development. Composition of matter is considered The Holy Grail of technology protection in biotech because it recognizes that the drug itself is truly novel and innovative. 💸From an investor or acquirer perspective, strong patents are what substantially increase the probability of realizing a return on their investment. Battle of the Biotherapies: AAV vs. RNA for Genetic Payloads... We looked at the landscape of indications in development for AAV and RNA-based medicines from our #TheraTrack platform. No surprise there are competitive programs in the same indication but just how many overlapping indications? ~30% of indications in development across RNA and AAV are shared across both modalities. The true number is probably a bit higher given the number of new programs exploding on the mRNA side that are undisclosed, but its not as significant as one would have perhaps thought. No surprise eye is squarely AAV's domain. Similarly, I&I type indications generally fall in the RNA bucket. Have a look and let us know what you think. How does AAV overcome its present challenges?
