“When Chris joined Picnic, I remarked that he hadn’t just jumped in with both feet, but that he performed, in fact, a full cannonball. Chris slid into product and program ownership within a week of arriving at the company. He brought his passion directly to several projects in flow, while at the same time stepping back to strategically reset company project planning with a new process. He’s an ideal product leader partner to a marketing team because he understands what it means to take a product to market and he knows how to ask the right questions and offer the right information. He keeps the customer’s needs front and center in every question and conversation. And it’s not just product, program, and process—Chris was an outstanding manager to his team. Respect clearly ran in both directions and he was a constant booster of both skills and morale. I would dive back into another crazy startup pool with Chris in a heartbeat.”

You’re looking for the best product marketing software for your startup. What should you be looking for?
Think like a CFO. What is the ROI on this spend and not just dollars. The opportunity cost of bringing in a new tool can be far greater than you might imagine. If you can’t project out more dollars in than dollars spent ($ plus opportunity cost) and make that case, you might not be ready to spend the money.

You're struggling to streamline your Product Marketing workflow. What tools can help you?
A software tool can be more of a distraction than a helper to your workflow if you haven't gotten clarity on what you are trying to accomplish and the shortest path to make it happen. Start with a pen and paper or a whiteboard. Get crisp on where you have slack and whether each part of your workflow is critical path (e.g. what would happen if I just didn't do X?)

You need to streamline your product marketing workflow. What’s the best way to do it?
I often find that all the great tools we can leverage can add complexity more than anything else. The way I get back to simplicity is to go back to pen and paper (or digital pen and paper) and document your process. What steps are superfluous to accomplishing the goal? Cut them. Then, it's easier to identify where your process has a gap and fix it fast, avoiding the dreaded "this process is broken!" from stakeholders.
