NYU-Poly's Center for K12 STEM Education is dedicated to creating opportunities and pathways for young people in Brooklyn and the NYC region to succeed in science and engineering education. Through our in-depth, highly engaging K12 STEM programs, NYU-Poly works with students, teachers and school leaders to create real, long-term opportunities for students to study and learn advanced STEM content. Our work goes beyond 'exposure' to science and engineering; our purpose in K12 STEM education is to both prepare students for higher education and careers in these fields through strong pedagogy and excite them about these disciplines by revealing the ways in which STEM studies and the scientific method create possibilities for professional and personal fulfillment.
As an example of the creative possibilities here and the ways in which the program methodology is broadly adaptable, NYU-Poly ran a small summer ‘pilot’ program on campus. We designed a five-week life sciences module for a group of high school students through a partnership funded by the Teagle Foundation. The design team consisted of members of our Chemistry department, a math teacher from the school and Dr. Cenk Sumen, a lab technology specialist from industry. They designed lectures, curriculum and experiments related to cancer, diabetes and AIDS as well as the tools scientists use in researching these diseases. NYU-Poly graduate students taught the 70-hour course and labs, with Dr. Sumen lecturing and supervising experiments.
