The SPRINT program intends to design, build, and fly an X-plane, an experimental aircraft to demonstrate enabling technologies and integrated concepts necessary for a transformational combination of aircraft speed and runway independence for the next generation of air mobility platforms. Congratulations to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration for their recent demonstration of continuous operation of a "rotating detonation engine" (RDE) [1] for 251 seconds. Details on earlier work are documented in reports and presentations from 2023 [2][3][4]. This technology is important because, if mastered it can simplify #rocket engines, decrease their size, increase the ISP [5] and increase efficiency. Both RDE and pulse detonation engines (PDE) [6] are making progress. This change in rocket technology is similar to the difference between a gasoline engine and diesel engine in automobiles. Different thermodynamic cycles [7] make it possible to extract more useful energy from combustion. Higher efficiency means that less fuel and oxidizer needs to launched to get to any other location space. This can decrease the cost of exploration and commercialization of #space. This technology has been incrementally improving for decades. Many academic groups at places like University of Michigan [8], Purdue University [9], Stanford University [10] and others are pushing the state of the art. However, progress was hindered because available materials could not endure the high temperatures and traditional design approaches (build-test-break) did not [11] work. Recent advances in #materials, #additivemanufacturing and #simulation are making RDE possible. These and other advancements in #aerospace engineering will continue to decrease the costs of working in space. This, in turn, makes the economic of space based #solar power (#SBSP) increasingly attractive while making it possible drive the cost of #energy down in the long term. Don't your assets have some place to be? The last time I checked, space was a risky place, and loitering around getting to where your valuable assets need to be is not conducive to good economics. This is where small launcher value propositions come into play. When you really accumulate all the costs (comprehensive costs) including engineering overheads, opportunity costs of poor orbit placements and maneuvering times, is there really a saving in not using a small launcher? If there is #data to acquire and sell, and considering you don't have that long in space in order to get it, I doubt that very much. There are quick ways to get your constellation working for you. This is not how you win #WW3. The US has become the high-cost producer of everything defense-related. The F-35 is not a new new thing. It is just the best expression of an old thing. At multiples of the cost. The new new thing is a drone. An F-35 is a very expensive drone with a pilot riding in it instead of controlling it from the ground. The only reason to put a human in a drone is to prevent jamming of the control of the drone. Is the juice worth the squeeze? It is $7mm per year just to keep an F-35 operational. That's a lot of drones. The problem to be solved is not how to get humans to ride more expensive jet fighters. Why moving to a single-point failure fighter enterprise is such a bad idea (1763 F-35s). Why having multiple fleets sized at reasonable economies of scale is so important in the defense industry. We cannot have a single source for firepower in any critical enterprise. We cannot rely on 1 factory to make widgets our national defense relies upon, 1 proprietary tech to be the lynchpin of our National Defense Strategy. Parts fail. Supply chains can't keep up with demands. That is industrial life. Our Defense infrastructure has to plan for those failures. I bet the Air Force wishes it had some updated MH-53s around right now. Or MH-47s.
