I just got back from moderating an all-star panel on public affairs communications at the 2024 PRWeek Healthcare Conference in NYC. Huge thanks to panelists Ray Carson of The ALS Association, Ryan Anderson of HCA Healthcare, and Jake Farmer of Walgreens. After working with these experts on impactful state legislative and amendment campaigns, I can confidently say they’re among the nation’s most savvy government relations leaders. It was great having such a wealth of knowledge and expertise on one stage! Here are 6 public affairs tips and takeaways from our discussion — all relevant whether you’re advocating in healthcare or another industry: 1️⃣ Know Your Lawmakers Tailor messaging strategies based on knowledge your lobby team gains from their deep connections in the state capital, combined with insights from your PR team. Research key lawmakers to understand how personal experiences may influence their decision-making, such as work history or unique perspectives like military service. 2️⃣ Offer Clear Solutions Lawmakers don’t want to act as problem solvers for every issue. Ensure messaging offers clear solutions and positions your organization as a partner, not just another special interest group. Demonstrate how you’ve implemented private sector solutions and highlight the need for statutory or regulatory changes to overcome remaining obstacles. 3️⃣ Go Local Share local insights, relationships, and constituent stories when communicating with lawmakers. Identify advocates in each member’s district who understand your top issues and can speak on your behalf. Local perspectives can tip the scales in your favor, often outweighing the influence of capital insiders. 4️⃣ Build Coalitions National advocacy groups on the fringes of the political spectrum are increasingly using state legislatures as a farm system. Counter these vocal fringe voices by investing more time and effort in recruiting trusted coalition partners. 5️⃣ Be the Early Bird Public affairs is a team sport. Assemble your team – including lobbyists, PR professionals, and lawyers – early in the planning process. Invite them to strategy meetings to foster collaboration. Don’t wait until legislative session to activate your PR outreach and grassroots advocacy efforts. 6️⃣ Trust Your PR Team! Engage a PR firm that specializes in public affairs and gets how the game is played. Lean on them to help define a clear narrative, develop messaging, and provide ‘air cover’ with consistent positive messaging to combat misinformation.

Top takeaways from the "Beyond the Basics: A #GenerativeAI Masterclass for Business Communicators" at #IABC24. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a workshop led by Matt Russell from the Mayo Clinic. The masterclass focused on leveraging #ChatGPT and other AI tools to grow and enhance business communications. Here are my top takeaways (first draft thanks to ChatGPT;) 1. Expand AI Use: Start using tools individually and then scale their uses across teams for enhanced productivity. 2. AI in Project Management: Integrate AI into project planning to streamline processes and boost efficiency. 3. Promote AI Integration: Develop strategies to advocate for AI adoption, keeping in line with policy and culture, while staying on top of advancements.

When the American Journalism Project launched five years ago, our mandate was to create the conditions for community-led nonprofit news organizations to sustainably provide the journalism our democracy requires. Today, I’m pleased to share our 2024 Impact Report, a look at the progress we’ve made since our inception. In the five years since our launch, we’ve raised $175 million from national and local philanthropy, and built a portfolio of 44 nonprofit local news organizations —  diverse in size, scope, reach and leadership. Some highlights from the report: -In the last year alone, our portfolio of 44 grantee organizations generated $86 million in revenue — a 36% increase over their 2022 revenue. -Year over year, the organizations in our portfolio are seeing a 58% median growth. -And this growth is leading to more journalism – last year, our portfolio of grantees employed 568 editorial and newsroom staff – an 18% increase over 2022. Organizations are growing, diversifying their revenue, adding journalists, and strengthening their communities. I’m proud of the progress the portfolio has made, and remain clear-eyed about the future. This report sheds light on how far we’ve come and sets the stage for what’s ahead. 🚨 Scholars interested in working with the media: In a survey of 1,000+ journalists on the state of journalism in 2024 by Muck Rack ... 83% of journalists prefer to be pitched 1:1 via email. 🔑 Make sure you personalize the message with specific mentions of their work, including their name, etc. Making sure the journalist covers your topic is also v important. 65% prefer pitches less than 200 words. 🔑 Keep it simple and succinct by just stating the most interesting part of the research - more than likely this is the findings! Lean into active language and cut the filler words. 46% receive 6 or more pitches daily. 🔑 Write a killer email subject line that is less than 60-80 characters, then get right to the point in your email body. Journalists consider subject matter experts (82%) and researchers (77%) to be the most credible sources. 🔑 That means you!
