🌍 Happy World Upcycling Day! 🌍 June is also Upcycled Food Month, designed to reduce food waste by promoting the upcycled food economy. According to the Upcycled Food Association, "upcycled products use ingredients that have full nutritional value and are safe but for various reasons, would have gone to waste." As much as I'd like to have our products be "Upcycled Certified". It may be a while. Here’s why: Denial of existence: our material comes from the orange juice industry, specifically the mandarin peel. Interestingly, "100% orange" juice can actually contain up to 10% mandarin juice. While this isn't so much a problem these days, on more than occasion I've had an orange juice company rep deny that they deal in mandarins, insisting that their juice is "100% orange juice" 🤷‍♂️ Peel Processing: orange juice manufacturers treat their peel with calcium hydroxide and press them to remove water, which leaches out most of the nutrients. Nutritional Differences: Modern mandarins, bred for higher sugar content, have much less nutritional value compared to older varieties (see graphic 😱 ) Chemicals: Conventional citrus peel is loaded in pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Organic peels are available, but expensive and, well, see the other points. We work with Asian orange juice companies that do not use pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, ensuring premium quality peel for our products. This premium peel was never waste; it was always destined for use in cooking. After sourcing our peel that would otherwise be purchased at Asian food markets, we put it through our extraction process, and deliver a clean, high-potency antioxidant and fiber-rich product great for digestion. Research published by by Peng et al. (PNAS) just last month shows that modern citrus has lost key DNA, resulting in lower levels of polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs). Sadly, the orange juice industry continues with a monoculture approach, focusing on varieties like Hamlin and Valencia (shown in blue in the image). The healthiest citrus North America ever cultivated, the Dancy mandarin (highlighted in yellow), is no longer commercially available due to large-scale growers abandoning it for newer, sweeter varieties. (source: Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity) I believe that once our vision becomes a reality, customers will drive the demand for these healthy "ancient" types of citrus, compelling both growers and juice companies to bring back these old-school varieties. Until then, we'll have to pass on Upcycled Certification - our peel was never waste. Biochar buyers in 2024 are getting discounts of up to 37%. As the supply of high-quality #biochar credits begins to dwindle, buyers are moving to long-term offtakes — commitments to purchase credits that have not yet been produced — to secure future supply. These early investments support projects with bankable contracts, helping to boost growth and accelerate maturity. In exchange for helping these projects scale, suppliers are offering buyers discounts of up to 37% depending on deal size and the amount paid upfront. While we believe that spot purchases have a place in every carbon removal portfolio, early and long-term investments, like #offtakes, can help drive much-needed growth in the broader carbon removal market. But spot purchases – let alone multi-year offtake agreements – can be complicated, especially for first-time buyers. Wondering where to get started? The roll out of MoCRA continues. Mandatory facility registration and product listings under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulations Act went into effect today, July 1. Also noted that while the FDA hasn't yet provided detailed guidance related to MoCRA's safety substantiation requirements, the essence of this requirement is already in effect and fully enforceable by the FDA. Affected cosmetic companies are advised to be able to provide safety data for their products "derived from scientifically robust methods." Being able to demonstrate that your cosmetic-related facility is in a state of control has always made good business sense; now it's a regulatory requirement.

Roche's recent decision to offload their Vacaville facility highlights the increasing importance of cell line productivity in biomanufacturing strategy. According to Dan Stanton of Bioprocess Insider, Roche is moving towards more high titer processes and products with lower volume demands. (You can read the article here https://lnkd.in/erRx597k) Agile manufacturing strategies are enabled by cell line productivity, which allows for the same amount of drug substance to be produced in smaller bioreactors. This, in turn, allows for smaller clean rooms and lower running costs. Just - Evotec Biologics' J.CHO High Expression System cell lines, grown in perfusion bioreactors, produce over 4 g/L of antibody each day, equivalent to around 30 g/L in fed-batch mode (https://lnkd.in/eexeJrQA). This level of productivity allows for commercial quantities of antibody to be manufactured in 1000L single-use bioreactors in our modular J.POD facilities. As a result, large-scale stainless-steel facilities are becoming redundant. 📣Aker BioMarine ASA Secures Patent for Enhanced PL+ EPA/DHA delivery technology The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted Aker BioMarine ASA a patent for its innovative PL+ EPA/DHA technology, an innovation that is bringing new bioavailable combination products to the nutraceuticals industry. Launched in late 2022, this technology uses natural marine phospholipids (PL’s) to maximize the uptake of other ingredients, up to 25 times more effectively. The patent covers formulations combining krill phospholipids with EPA and DHA from fish oil, forming effective emulsions to boost nutrient absorption in the stomach. This development addresses fish oil supply challenges by enhancing bioavailability and reducing the need for fish oil in products💊 Aker BioMarine's recent clinical trials confirm the superior bioavailability of krill oil.
