Andrew A. Michta is Director of the Scowcroft Strategy Initiative and Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, DC. From 206-2023 he was Dean of the College of International and Security Studies at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. In 2015 -16 he was Professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College; 2014-16 an Adjunct Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. From 1988-2015 he was the M. W. Buckman Distinguished Professor of International Studies at Rhodes College. In 2013-14 he was a Senior Fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, DC. In 2011-2013 he was a Senior Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Director of the GMFUS Warsaw office. In 2010-11 he was a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington. In 2005-09 he was Professor of National Security Studies and Director of Studies of the Senior Executive Seminar at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany. He is a Member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Previously he was a Visiting Scholar at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University, a Public Policy Scholar at the Wilson Center, and a Research Associate at the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, The George Washington University. He also served as Editor for East Europe and Member of the Board of the refereed journal Problems of Post-Communism, and serves on a number of advisory boards.
Professor Michta has published books, book chapters and articles on U.S. and European security, NATO, transatlantic relations, civil-military relations, energy security and democratization. He has special expertise in Central European politics and security. He is a frequent media contributor and government consultant. Professor Michta holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from The Johns Hopkins University. His latest book with Paal Hilde on NATO after ISAF was published by the Univ. of Michigan Press in 2014. He presently working on a book on the resurgence of state-on-state competition in the 21st centry and its impact on U.S. national security policy.
