Why is searching for a new role so scary? Personally the idea of trying to convince a hiring manager that my life and professional experience is "enough" for their organization skyrockets my anxiety. Over the past week I've been searching for roles in the change management and communications space. Many of the roles lean more towards a senior management or director level. I'd like to continue on this track but apparently need more formal change management experience. In my current role, upward growth is limited as the organization is family-owned and only really promotes those in the family. Please normalize… hiring professionals doing the actual work (not just the CEOs & directors or influencers following developed campaigns) to speak at conferences… And recognize that there are innovative professionals older than 40. Diversify the ages of your creative panels and hiring rosters.

This feels scary. To write, share, and put myself out there. Has anyone experienced "The Great Unknown" (that's what I am calling it, and that is what I am going with.) Taking a break from your career, doing a whole lot of introspection, and being a tiny bit scared, embarrassed?!!??!, vulnerable, to what feels like starting again. Over the past few months, I have been fortunate enough to take a break from the mainstream working world - freelance for amazing clients, do powerful work in an entirely new space, prioritise my well-being and address burnout head-on. My body/mind thought it was in an endless marathon that I didn’t remember signing up for. I needed to take a step back. This journey of self-discovery and growth has been invaluable, and I'm grateful for the support of friends, family, and mentors. This time has reinforced the importance of balance, boundaries, and self-care in both my personal and professional lives. BUT, I have really missed people. The teams brainstorming, getting super excited about campaigns, and sending really bad, but great, memes. Now, with renewed energy, enthusiasm, and perspective, I am ready to step back into the world. I am trying to be brave and embrace being nervous at the same time. Okaaaay let’s go, I have hyped myself up too, if you know of any exciting opportunities or simply want to catch up, please reach out! 🔎 Job hunting: 👾 Endless doom scroll or regimented and balanced? ⚖️ If you don’t have a job, looking for a job is probably your job. It can feel tempting to spend the entire day searching and refreshing and perfecting and editing and whateverelseing. If you’re constantly in motion, it feels like you’re doing something. You’re not taking this lying down. 💪 You’re working harder. But then, what about working smarter? Is there a way to do your job hunting stuff on a regular basis while also finding ways to actually enjoy this time without a job? To get out to the beach or go for a walk or to experience some local museum or event you have been meaning to check out. To let life continue to happen. To be enriched by the downtime. To come back to the job hunt refreshed with fresh perspective and inspiration. ✨ If this reads as a post that’s about to give you some advice, I apologize for misleading you. I was just throwing out some ideas that sounded cool. 🤣 This post is actually me looking for suggestions from you. 😬 So, I wondered if anyone wouldn’t mind sharing their job search routines— ones that include time and space for life to happen outside of the doom scrolling refresh of death to which I feel so predisposed. 🤔 What do you do to maintain a work-life balance when job hunting is your job?
