Pro tip - the formula I use to compare comp structures side-by-side: W-2 earnings [base+commission+bonuses] ÷ your annual billings [gross profit] = the % of your production you're taking home in earned income Comp structures have lots of different components, including extra kickers and incentives, so the % you get from this number smooths all of those out which can be confusing. If you track it on a regular basis (quarterly, biannually, or annually), it is a great number to keep track of as this is the % that really matters! This is the best way to compare comp structures agency-to-agency since most agencies have different tiers, kickers, and added incentives which make it hard to compare comp structures to each other.

I’m representing roles that range from Senior through Controller and the comp on these range vastly. - Senior Accountant searches ranging between $75k-$130k - Accounting Manager searches ranging between $100k-$140k - Finance Manager searches ranging between $120k-$160k - Controller ranging between $110k-$230k The takeaway here, titles do not equate to salary! This is tough one to wrap around, but context is key when it comes to “pricing” a role within the market.
