This move closely resembles the pricing we see for software like Adobe Photoshop. But the timing, coming shortly after Unity's rocky rollout, makes us think about the state of the tech market. ⏳💻 During these industry changes, we've witnessed a significant development within Unity itself. Unity's President and CEO, John Riccitiello, has announced his immediate retirement following the uproar over Unity's fee structure changes. Is Unity committing corporate suicide? A large portion of the mobile gaming market is predicated on an ecosystem of free players and whales. The new Unity pricing plan is going to make a lot of freemium mobile games unsustainable. Free casual players create a larger ecosystem and make achievements more satisfying for the powergamers/whales. Being ranked 300 out 10000 is a lot less engaging than being ranked 300 out of 1,000,000. The reason why a lot of web3 gaming projects failed was because they were NFT gated. They lacked a free entry point to create a large base userbase. This seems like a move that will push indie and mobile developers towards Unreal. Godot (a free open source engine) might be the biggest long-term beneficiary. What are you hearing or think about Unity's move and its ramifications? A prototype that I made a few years ago for an Oculus Go. The controller was minimalistic to say the least. But I could pair the headset with an Xbox controller. This was built using Unity. But these days I’m building everything for WebXR (ThreeJS, Aframe) - using only open source and browser launched.
