💬 Many female content creators have courageously spoken out about the toxicity they encounter in online gaming spaces, aiming to create a community of support and safety. The problem? 🕹️ There’s still a lot of ground to cover. Misogyny often starts at an early age, shaping perceptions of diversity and inclusion. Female characters are often hypersexualized, perpetuating harmful stereotypes. The representation of women in video games has long been abysmal. 📊 A 2019 study by Western Washington University revealed that the misrepresentation of women and POC within video games drives away the very audiences being misrepresented. If misrepresented communities are pushed away from video games, how do we prevent biases from seeping into character designs? How do we break this positive feedback loop? #TakeActionTuesday: Women’s sports are on 🔥 and we are seeing tremendous investments start to pay out across the women’s sports landscape, such as Kansas City Current unveiling the first women’s soccer specific stadium, sellout crowds for the PWHL, all five power conferences saw new highs in women’s basketball tournament attendance and viewership, and so much more! All of this progress reminds us that, thanks to #TitleIX, the lifelong benefits of sport that girls and women have had access to through for the last 51 years are now being seen across the women’s sports ecosystem. The opportunities created by Title IX at the K-12 and collegiate levels has changed the game for girls and women in sports and allowed for greater access to equal promotion, facilities, coaching and more! This historic law has allowed us to witness the incredible rise of this new generation of athletes, like 16-year-old Alex Pfeiffer, the youngest goal scorer in National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) history, and for athletes throughout the country to envision a path they can follow to professional sports and beyond. As Billie Jean King says, “you have to see it to be it!”  #TheEquityProject Your Turn: But we know that for all the progress, we’re not done yet! 1. Significant gaps in access and opportunity persist for girls and women in school sports. Speak with your members of Congress about the need for adequate funding for the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the U.S. Department of Education, which will enable OCR to strengthen and expand its efforts to fully enforce Title IX.  2. Girls and women of color, individuals with disability and LGBTQ+ youth, participate in school sport at lower levels and face greater barriers to participation. Ask the administration in your school to bring in a Title IX expert to speak to your athletic department to learn more about your rights and what the law means for your athletic program. This phase of my life is officially over. 🥹 One day, in my first year of university, I was just sitting in a lecture, daydreaming as I commonly would. I thought to myself "I want to write my Bachelors thesis about diversity in the gaming industry." 🤔 Little did I know, 3 years later, I would make that a reality, and be able to call Women in Games International (WIGI) my client for the research project. 💜 For the last 5 months, I have been writing my thesis about DEI in the gaming industry, aiming to answer my research question of "How might Women in Games International (WIGI) empower underrepresented genders working in gaming to improve DEI in the gaming industry?" 💡 And yesterday, at exactly 12:00 PM on the dot, I submitted it. 5 months of work handed in. I was overwhelmed with emotion. 🤯 Not only was this such an important research topic for me, and made me appreciate the people in the gaming industry EVEN MORE, but handing in my thesis made me realize that my student days are officially over. 🥺 At 23 years old, I feel like I should still be eating with a bib, yet I am going to be putting my adult boots on, hoping to delve deep into the very industry I've been researching all these months. I'm excited. I'm terrified. I'm grateful. I'm anxious. I'm feeling so many emotions. With that being said, I want to thank all of my coaches and professors I've had during my years at Inholland University of Applied Sciences. The people who supported me, cheered me on, answered every question I had, and ultimately showed me that I am capable of success, after spending my entire life thinking I wouldn't graduate high school, let alone graduate college. 💜 I also want to thank every single person who helped me during the research process of my thesis. I spoke with so many amazing people from the gaming industry. I read so many of your stories, got a true behind the scenes look into the experiences of underrepresented individuals and I learned more than I ever thought I could about this ever-developing industry. 🫶🏻 What a journey it has been. I can't wait for the future, to hopefully see a positive change within DEI in the gaming industry. I hope all the blood, sweat and tears I put into my thesis research will allow me to be a part of that change, alongside the amazing individuals in my network who are the biggest reason I made it to this point. 🙌🏻 Thank you. Two years ago on June 23, 2022, we honored the 50th anniversary of Title IX, and its positive impact on women athletes and athletics more broadly. . The very next day, June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its Dobbs v Jackson decision - essentially paving the way toward the erosion of bodily autonomy and access to reproductive healthcare for every woman in the U.S., including all female athletes. These two historic moments are important to understand individually, and so is the relationship between them.  In preparation for the pending collision of these two landmark decisions, I interviewed  Dr. Victoria Jackson, a sports historian and former NCAA record holder who is an expert on understanding the relationship between Title IX and Roe. Although women's sports is having a long-time coming moment (and a huge 'YES!' for that), I wanted to repost my interview with Dr. Jackson here today to elevate our understanding of what is at stake regarding our upcoming elections and our future. As Dr. Jackson shared in our conversation: "We've been seeing a lot of universities, sports conferences and major brands roll out Title IX programming to celebrate this important anniversary. But a lot of the framing and coverage is misleading about what the legislation is really about. The narrative seems to be a version of: 'It was bad for women in sports, and now it's great thanks to Title IX. Women didn’t used to be able to play basketball, and now they can. Isn’t that wonderful?' It’s obviously more complicated than that. There’s a responsibility that comes with being a woman in sports. You need to know the people that came before you who did the work to get to the place where it is now. And that we’re still working hard to get to where we need to go. Women’s equal participation in sports is not something any of us can take for granted. We are in a period of erosion in all sorts of ways – not just in a sporting sense, but more broadly around women’s rights, bodily autonomy, and basic safety. Sports are the frontlines of that, and using your body for your own power and pleasure is a thing that a lot of women athletes take for granted in 2022 but shouldn't. We all need to keep doing that work so that we can continue to protect what we have, and hopefully continue to expand opportunities." Please read and share this interview.
