New Post: Social media now unlawful for kids under 14 in Florida - https://lnkd.in/gixJUs8s - Florida has just enacted a new law restricting social media access for children. Those aged 15 and under must now obtain their parents' consent to have a social media account, while children under 14 aren't allowed to have one at all. That's no more TikTok, no more Snapchat, no more Facebook, and no more Instagram.Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 3 (HB 3) on Monday, after previously vetoing similar legislation earlier this month. At the time, he cited the imminent arrival of a "superior" bill that would " parents' rights." It appears that HB 3 is that bill. SEE ALSO: Instagram Reels reportedly shows sexual content to users who only follow children "Social media harms children in a variety of ways," said DeSantis in a statement on Monday. "HB 3 gives parents a greater ability to protect their children."The new law will go into effect from Jan. 1 next year, which gives Florida's kids a bit of time to either persuade their parents to sign their permission slip, or download all their posts before their accounts are deleted. Many social media platforms already impose age requirements in their terms of service. Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat all require users to be at least 13 years old, while TikTok provides users aged 13 and under with a "curated, view-only experience… that includes additional safeguards and privacy protections." HB 3 will impose a higher legal age limit of 14, as well as charge penalties to social media platforms for any violations. How to legally use social media if you're a child in FloridaUnder Florida's new legislation, social media platforms must prohibit children under the age of 14 from creating accounts, as well as delete any such accounts which already exist. The TikTok accounts of Florida's 13-year-olds may not be saved by them simply lying about their age, either. Accounts that are treated or categorised as belonging to a user likely under the age threshold must also be terminated. As such, accounts could be deleted if the platform's algorithm determines that a user's preferred content indicates they are 13 or younger. This doesn't mean children are immediately set loose to flood Snapchat with Stories on their 14th birthday. While children aged 13 and under are completely banned from social media, 14- and 15-year-olds can only have accounts if their parent or guardian provides consent to the platform. If a child can't obtain such consent, it's strictly emails and group chats for them until they turn 16. A caregiver can also revoke consent and request a company straight up delete their child's social media accounts. Fortunately, HB 3 explicitly excludes platforms that are exclusively for sending content to clearly identified recipients, meaning email and direct messaging services are still available to all regardless of parental approval. https://lnkd.in/dbxk8u6y Finally, something we’ve all known for a long time is being acknowledged… I hope and believe this could be a turning point and not just a media stunt. What do you think? 🤔 Big tech companies now wield power that can be compared to that of a state. It’s even admitted that they can generate addiction and influence human behavior. But when will the legislator step in to set the rules? Probably too late. What’s your take on this? Do you think this could be a first step to curb the overwhelming power of social media or just another media stunt? What’s at stake, in your opinion? Which rights and freedoms are most involved? 🗽 Do you think a revolution leading to the effective regulation of social media use is possible? Have you ever wondered why big tech companies are among the richest, yet all their services are free? Will they be sanctioned? Comment below with your thoughts. 💭 #Innovation #SocialMedia #DigitalRights #DigitalFreedom #BigTechRegulation #DigitalAddiction #DigitalLegislation

Gotta #love how everyone is now copying Blotout -> Interesting story telling about how they discovered it via CEO feedback, etc. here is the #truth It's #none of that - its an existential crisis for all of the competition who have played the #offside game for years -> buying #email against an anonymous user has been in #noncompliance for years now. However, building a #competent product takes product engineering and #infrastructure capabilities. Borrowing #opensource or #fast copying someone else can get you a good #marketing story but can't get you results. #pivoting out of the "easy" way is hard and building #compliance and #performancemarketing is harder. Same goes for the #blackbird companies who blatantly copy our website and call themselves #infrastructure but are yet to solve something as #basic as #adblocking It is amazing though, we have gone from #newcomer to everyone' target to replicate; we must be doing a lot of things with #rightmindset If you want to know who I am taking an aim at, Type August 30th - also my #birthday and I can tell you all of the gossipy details; j/k! Meanwhile we keep #innovating -> https://lnkd.in/geC6fFyQ

Facebook is grappling with curbing cyberbullying, harassment, and hate speech… Thanks to the Community Standards Enforcement Report from Facebook, we at Besedo pulled some interesting numbers. We learned that in one year, between September 2022 and 2023, Facebook took action on more than 78 million content items. And while Facebook is doing great with its continuous content moderation, the issues remain with every content platform out there. Looking at the internet as a whole, the numbers around cyberbullying and harassment are equally depressing as they are staggering. We have a whole post here: https://lnkd.in/dXAj44E8 Some interesting numbers: 🚨 Approximately 41% of U.S. adults have personally experienced some form of online harassment. 🚨 25% have experienced more severe forms of harassment. 👧 Nearly half (46%) of all students aged 13-17 in America have experienced cyberbullying 👦 One in three (33%) middle and high school students have seen rumors about themselves online. For platforms that offer user-generated content (UGC), preventing cyberbullying is not just a moral responsibility but also essential for maintaining a positive brand image and user experience. If you wanna know more, I’d be happy to show you content moderation use cases based on your industry. Just ping me here!

Perhaps I'm leaning towards paranoia, but I can't help feeling that the current wave of AI-generated images sweeping across Facebook (mostly featuring little children making things out of tires or plastic bottles) isn't so much a random explosion of unthinking kitsch as it is a very carefully targeted strategy by our corporate and political overlords to identify intellectually vulnerable people they can exploit. Of course there will always be exceptions, but in general I think it's safe to say that the sort of person who believes these images to be real photographs, and who shares them or likes them on Facebook, has under-developed critical faculties. This automatically identifies them an ideal audience for people who want to sell them a product or an ideology. If their mistake is pointed out to them and they double down ("No, I know the photographer" "Well it doesn't matter who made the image, it's still great") then they have identified themselves as something even more valuable: a person who becomes more, not less committed to the fake (or brand or political fraud) when their mistake is pointed out by their peers. These aren't pictures. They're a gill net.

If you want to keep in touch with family and friends, share photos and such, all the while enjoying some of the aspects of #socialmedia, you are safer using #telegram instead of #facebook or #instagram. Facebook as the cool kids would say, have been caught in 4K, circumventing data #encryption for apps like #snapchat, #amazon and #youtube to understand 'YOUR' behaviour and interactions with other applications and services. #analytics and user data is a commodity often abused by companies like Facebook, to gain the upper hand or competitive edge. This is not a crack pot conspiracy theory. Tech Crunch has reported on this. https://lnkd.in/eW-isrn3

Data Girl and Friends | Digital Defender Parent | Empower Young Minds with Online Safety and AI Awareness
I keep reading this article that Ben Sheedy was kind enough to share with me again and again because it's so hard to stomach. It talks about newly unredacted Meta documents that suggest a long-standing reluctance within the company to implement protective measures for children on its platforms. Just to be clear, apparently the ALGORITHMS were showing abusive material to minors. It is just a lawsuit, so I'll let the courts decide on the outcome. There is a bigger lesson here, though: 💡 When technology develops too quickly, safety protocols don't keep up, especially when profits and influence come before people. 💡 Responsible, ethical AI cannot be a "nice to have." 💡 As individuals, we must call this out, loud and clear, if we see this kind of thing happening in our organizations. 💡 As a society, we must avoid embracing technology without fully understanding or acknowledging its potential harms, especially to vulnerable groups. EVERYONE must care about this! We can't be in a race to get the most benefit from AI that involves running over the defenseless along the way. So, from today, the everyday data defenders will include a weekly session on this topic. #onlinesafety #responsibleai #datadefenders #protectwhatmatters
