I teach an entire unit on the political and cultural dangers of social media. The mental health issues associated with social media always come up organically in our discussions. Social media can be an engine for so much good, but it can also have severe, adverse impacts. This is especially true when we look at its impact on young people. Who knows what will come of this lawsuit, but I think it's important to show that social media companies are not beyond reproach when it comes to contributing to the mental health crisis. #MentalHealth #SocialMedia #MentalHealthCrisis

I applaud the 40+ states for taking an important stand on this issue. Its about time as we have been seeing these trends since 2013+. Articles, Videos, Interviews have been around for several years. Like underage smoking, social media addiction and screen time are harming our youth. Tech companies may not have foreseen these unintended consequences, but the data is clear: social media is harmful. Social media is an addiction Social media addiction and screen time are harming our youth's mental health, social skills, and physical health. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 64% of teens say they are constantly checking their phones for notifications. This constant distraction can lead to anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. Social media can also damage our youth's social skills. A study by the University of Pennsylvania found that students who used social media more frequently were more likely to report feeling lonely and isolated. Social media can also lead to cyberbullying and other forms of online harassment. Finally, social media addiction and screen time can lead to physical health problems, such as obesity, eye strain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Its beyond Gen Z The harmful nature of social media has also hit other generations. A study by the University of Maryland found that adults who use social media more frequently are more likely to report feeling anxious and depressed. Is Mark Zuckerberg the Pied Piper of Hamelin leading kids astray with addictive Social Media apps? "Big Social Media" could be another Juul lawsuit. Billions of dollars are on the line. Parents will have their day in court, says a Judge on Friday 2/23/24. Predatory advertising is a form of psychological manipulation. But to what end? Addiction? Looks like Civil Law, not medicine will have the final word. The battle will be tricky because there is no Psychiatric "illness" called internet addiction per the Psychiatric DSM-5-TR, though it is on the radar. 1980 is when the APA recognized tobacco addiction and the symptoms of addiction. The current (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) edition identifies what might be a potential diagnosis of what might be "Internet Gaming Disorder" but doesn't yet state it is a psychiatric condition. I predict by the next edition, the DSM will have to commit to the "addiction" symptoms of internet gaming. Another day, another social media ban. Georgia joins the long list of states that have attempted to limit social media use through law. Legislation is the easy path to "do something" which is more performative than preventive. It is time for a multi-prong approach of education, counseling, and support to be used to help prepare pre-teens and teens for social media. We also need to work with social media platforms to eliminate the functions that they know harm teen mental health. I do hope our European Ministries of health, look at these necessary proposals that focus on "banning children younger than 13 from social media and requiring teens younger than 18 to get parental consent to access the sites". With all the hype created on prevention, why not start with the low hanging fruits? Should our focus be on developing apps to solve the problem other apps created? No, prevention means to focus on "do no harm". How long do we have to wait? Is there too much self interest to use these social media channels for political influencing? Why isn't this on the agenda? I looked at the German ministry of Health's website, and couldn't find any link that warns from the use of social media and mental health.
