Embracing immigration is crucial to countering population decline and enriching our neighborhoods. The Welcoming Center is one such organization in #Philadelphia supporting #immigrants with English language education and job support. “If leaders believe that a growing population is something they want to aspire to — if they want to preserve a tax base, if they want new business startups — then they need to understand this is all going to happen through immigration,” says The Welcoming Center CEO Anuj Gupta. Our partner, the IRC's Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) recently released a report that analyzes credit scores for those participating in its “Credit-Building Ladder” model and loan program. The report serves as a compelling case for the integrated model of financial products and programs being implemented by CEO and its network of community partners. The findings also underscore the potential for small-dollar loan products to quickly generate significant positive outcomes, especially for those without a credit history. This report will help inform policymakers, financial institutions, funders, community-based organizations, researchers, borrowers, and more. Immigrant #doctors are key to addressing critical shortages in health care and enriching our health care system, but barriers such as home residency requirements discourage the retention of international medical graduates. Programs such as the Conrad 30 Waiver Program clear these barriers for internationally educated health professionals by waiving home residency requirements and allowing immigrant physicians to finish their residency training in underserved areas. “It seems to me, just given the demographics of our population and the workforce issues we face, that it makes sense for us to explore some options to help address those barriers,” said Public Health Committee co-chair Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey. Read about other programs that support immigrant doctors at Connecticut Mirror with Katy Golvala: https://ow.ly/PhNQ50SH7Ey

World Education Services applauds the Maryland Board of Nursing and the Welcome Back Center of Suburban Maryland for their leadership and perseverance in driving impactful reform to nursing licensure requirements in the State,” said Esther T. Benjamin, WES CEO and executive director. “We look forward to continuing our shared work to eliminate barriers facing internationally educated nurses in #Maryland and beyond.” As of last month, the Maryland Board of Nursing expanded options for English-language competency examinations. This offers #nurses who hold credentials from outside the U.S. a more inclusive pathway to occupational licensure. We join our partners in Maryland and the internationally trained nurses who will now be able to re-join their profession in celebrating this positive change for all Marylanders!
