The WIRED Middle East Summer 2024 is here! This edition of the magazine explores the limits of humanity – from the Olympic athletes at the peak of human performance and the science that could expand their limitations, to real-life #cyborgs like Neil Harbisson implanting technology in their bodies. As the #Paris2024 #Olympics are well underway, this issue dive into the stories of Olympic heroes. From Farida Osman's shocking exclusion from this year's Olympics to the relentless drive of refugee Olympians like Yusra Mardini and Perina Nakang, we see the human spirit in action. It's not easy being human in the digital age. In a wide-ranging conversation with #HasanPiker, we dig into media literacy, bias and the role of popular #streamers such as himself as a complement to mainstream media. In the age of influence, we speak to regional influencers about what it means to make social media a profession. Looking closer at the relationship between human and machine, we set a WIRED editor up with an AI boyfriend, and she finds that the experience is a little too familiar.   Click to read the editor's letter and get your copy of the magazine to read these articles and more! https://lnkd.in/dwg8Z8Fu

#Palestinian swimmer Yazan Al Bawab is preparing for the Paris #Olympics, but he's not buckling under the pressure. "The pressure is not on somebody like me. There is pressure on people back home, who are in a far more difficult situation. All I have to do is swim," he says. "However, it is a complete honor to have the platform as an Olympian to have my voice heard. The idea of sports is that it is an equal playing field, and that is exactly what we want. An equal playing field, where we are viewed with equal respect."Both athlete and entrepreneur, Al Bawab spends his time outside of the pool advocating for Palestinian #athletes and their right to a spot on the global stage. Representing one's country in the Olympics is one of the highest honors an athlete can achieve. Yet since 2016, every four years, the Refugee Olympics Team has competed not for their countries, but for their lack thereof. In the second of our two covers for the WIRED Middle East Summer 2024, we zoom in on a candid one-on-one between former refugee Olympian Yusra Mardini and Perina Nakang, a member of the #RefugeeOlympicsTeam making her debut at the Paris #Olympics 2024. They share stories about their unimaginably difficult beginnings and the path that ultimately led each to compete on the global stage. This year, the Refugee Olympic Team consists of 36 #athletes from around the world, including Perina Nakang. Sports have given these athletes a sense of purpose and hope, and a platform to inspire millions of refugees around the world. What does it mean to be an Olympian without a country? Farida Osman is most recognizable in a cap and swim goggles, but we see a different side of her in the cover shoot for the first of our two Summer 2024 covers. More than a decade into her swimming career, Osman reflects on her legacy and a future beyond swimming (once she decides to get out of the pool, that is). Could her next step be in the world of #fashion, or #marketing? It's possible, she says. We speak with her directly following the devastating news that she would not be eligible for the Paris #Olympics, and learn about the grit and resilience it takes for Osman to keep her head above water throughout the many ups and downs she has faced in a record-breaking and historic career. The WIRED Middle East Summer 2024 issue is here! In the first of our two covers for this issue, we speak to Africa’s fastest female swimmer, Egypt's Farida Osman. In a candid one-on-one with WIRED's Senior Editor, she opens up about her shocking exclusion from the #Paris2024 #Olympics, the pressure of living up to her legacy as a professional #athlete, and how she separates Farida the Athlete from Farida the Human. It's not always easy – early in her career she almost quit swimming altogether. “The more highs you get, the more expectations you have of yourself,” Osman says. “I need to remind myself that being on top for so many years is not easy.” What does it take to make it to the top (and to stay there)?
