Wherobots has already been working with Overture data as we ramped up. It's great to have them officially on the team. Not all map data ends up on visual map displays...spatial analysis is a huge and growing use case for open map data.
🎉🌐 Wherobots has officially joined Overture Maps Foundation to support the next generation of planetary-scale open map data! 🎉🌐 We've supported the development of Overture datasets through Overture Maps Foundation’s use of the open-source Apache Sedona project to develop and distribute the Overture datasets, enabling Overture to embrace modern cloud-native geospatial technologies like GeoParquet. By joining Overture Maps Foundation as Contributing Members Wherobots will continue to support the ongoing development, distribution, and evolution of this critical open dataset that enables developers and data practitioners to make sense of the world around us. CEO @ Wherobots | Making our planet more livable, sustainable, and prosperous with the spatial intelligence cloud
Many inquire about the distinctions between WherobotsDB, PostgreSQL, and DuckDB when it comes to handling spatial data. First, we quickly explain what spatial data is and then show how the three systems differ? Spatial data: refers to information about events occurring at specific locations in the real world. This can include data on moving assets like cars, aircraft, and ships; man-made activities such as home purchases, concerts, foot traffic to various destinations, and crime incidents; as well as natural events like weather phenomena, natural disasters, and environmental monitoring data. Additionally, spatial data can pertain to events in virtual environments, such as gaming or VR/AR settings. Here's a summary of how the 3 systems differ: - WherobotsDB is a data processing engine optimized from the ground-up for spatial data workloads. It leverages Apache Sedona for scale-out distributed spatial analytics and AI operations in cloud-native environments. Explore WherobotsDB: https://wherobots.com/ - PostgreSQL is a relational database system for OLTP workloads, featuring a spatial extension (PostGIS) for basic spatial operations. It necessitates a running database server for client applications to connect and perform data operations. - DuckDB is an embedded-in-application relational database engine suited for small-scale OLAP workloads, with a spatial extension for rapid spatial operations. Easy to install on local machines, DuckDB is ideal for small-scale OLAP tasks. These systems can complement each other and are compatible with GIS applications like ArcGIS, QGIS, and BI tools. Remember, they can be used individually or in combination based on the specific workload requirements.
