Refugee women often face barriers to accessing financial tools and services, keeping them in poverty. RefuSHE's Womens Ambassador Groups (WAGs) are savings and self-help groups for refugee women, providing financial support and empowerment. The WAGs offer essential support, creating pathways to independence and transforming communities. Recently, we conducted a vetting process in Kitengela, Nairobi, to select WAGs who qualify for financial support. Our thorough vetting process ensures qualified groups receive loans and business coaching to grow their enterprises. Over the past 4 weeks, RefuSHE has traversed different locations in Nairobi County, including Kasarani, Githurai, Kitengela, Ruiru, Kawangware, Rongai, Eastleigh, and Kayole—urban areas that are predominantly occupied by #refugees. During these weeks, we have introduced SHElearns, a digital learning and wellness platform that offers short courses in vocational training, business, and mental health. Examples of courses include hairdressing and beauty, online work, tailoring, building and construction, and many others. The goal has been to ensure refugees have access to the skills they need to become self-reliant while running their own small businesses. RefuSHE recently assessed the impact of our Paracounselors program, where we've trained 15 urban refugees to become community para-counselors. This initiative makes mental health services more accessible and culturally relevant to refugees living across Nairobi's informal settlements. Our assessment of counselling recipients showed promising results: 1. 😌 Improved overall mental well-being 2. 🌟 Enhanced self-perception and awareness 3. 🧘 Better stress management skills 4. 🔄 High demand for follow-up sessions 5. 👍 Positive reception of counseling services Based on these positive outcomes, we plan to expand the program to reach even more refugees in need of mental health support across Nairobi.
