Scientists and the forest industry are teaming up to make pulping greener! 🌍💡 Together with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, we're leading a 5-year programme to use wood more efficiently and cut emissions 🌳 Emission Free Pulping is a groundbreaking research programme with around 20 full-time researchers. I'm Katariina, I study materials chemistry at the University of Turku and for the summer I'm working in the Quantum sensors team at VTT 👋🔬 🧪 My work here is primarily cleanroom-based, so I typically spend my days there making samples and characterising them. Long time no see and greetings from VTT! ✨ It's been four months since I started my journey here at VTT as a postdoctoral researcher. It's been quite a ride full of new learnings. For these past months I've been working with energy-related topics: Energy sufficiency, energy humanities, energy justice, energy security and resilience in multiple forms and contexts. It's been merely a scratch of the surface so far, but I'm extremely honored to have gotten the opportunity to play my small part in trying to create even a slightly more sustainable future. I've been mainly working in the REPower-CEST initiative with the aim of tackling wicked problems concerning energy justice and security, bringing human centric approaches, ideas and understanding to the topic. The work has just begun, so I expect to be able to tell you more about the proceedings further. I've also been a part of discussions of how to conceptualize energy and make it approachable for everyone. On this final day before my summer holidays I'm working on a journal article on energy flexibility and thermal comfort with Rakesh Ramesh and Hassam ur Rehman. There is still so much to learn, but what can I say? To hire a Japanologist to work on clean energy transition is truly #VTTbeyondtheobvious! Thank you for all you technical people for making room for your resident humanities person! 😃 And, not to forget Japan - I've had the pleasure of participating in meetings with Japanese companies here as well. It's always a pleasure to be able to put that specific skill set to good use 🗾😊
