News is out: Alma raised $5.1m to revolutionize immigration! While TechCrunch spotlights my story, my brilliant co-founders, Assel Tuleubayeva and Shuo Chen, also faced significant immigration hurdles. Our shared experiences fueled our mission to simplify U.S. immigration. We're thrilled to embark on this journey with our incredible partners: Bling Capital, Forerunner, Village Global, NFX, Conviction, MVP Ventures, New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Silkroad Innovation Hub! A heartfelt thank you to our day-one supporters and, most importantly, to all the immigrants trusting Alma with their American dream. Your faith in us drives our innovation! #Alma #ImmigrationMadeEasy

Our SpaceWERX team met with Orbital Prime awardee, Rebel Space, for a demonstration of their Sophia Security Software for Trusted Communications. Sophia is an Orbital Prime-awarded innovation supporting In-space Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) missions utilizing SEER technology - an AI-powered cybersecurity software that identifies, detects, protects, and responds to emerging electronic and cyber threats for space operations. The demonstration displayed capabilities such as cyber risk management framework for space operations, threat indications and warnings using AI/ML models, and autonomous response and in-situation learning that collects and exploits data for conducting in-depth analysis. Rebel Space will be leveraging their recent TACFI award funding to continue growing this SEER capability and provide space operators with the observability, security, and trusted autonomy necessary for resilient space operations in the space and cyber domains. Being an angel can at times feel like you’re on your own island. Last week we hosted our second annual Angel Island — where independent angels and fund managers connected with fellow early-stage investors and swapped insights about what’s happening in the market. Some topics of note: • Even before managers do reference checks on founders, the quality and seniority of their provided references can speak volumes.  • As angels write bigger checks, there is more expectation from founders that the angels will be hands-on.  • Many personal investors are electing not to transition to professional fund managers to retain flexibility around pacing and pricing, and given the tougher LP market. • Some sectors like cyber don’t have a winner take all profile; many funds can return 3x-4x DPI without marquee exits or an IPO.  • Make sure your founders have a process or routine in place to help them endure for a very long game. One manager talked about the work he did to have a 13+ year career in the NFL; there are analogies between athletic prep and founder prep. Some hotter takes we overheard: • Help companies that are winning. It’s ok to not help the failing companies. Don’t throw good money at bad signal. • There was a fair amount of discussion re: the upside/downside of telling a founder that they should stop pursuing their idea, and the challenge of whether to back a great founder with a so-so idea. At the end of the day we heard from Guillermo Rauch from Vercel, who spoke passionately about open source frameworks, design engineering, and why he’s long on Bitcoin. At the core of Village Global’s investing ethos is a deep belief in the power of network. We were delighted to produce the event with our friends over at GIC.

Thank you Guillermo Rauch for sharing big-picture wisdom & actionable tips with Village Global founders and network investors. Great to partner with Chloe Breider & Chris Emanuel on this convening!

Guillermo Rauch from Vercel is atop one of the most important and fastest growing companies in Silicon Valley. Speaking with founders from Village Global yesterday he touched on everything from how to cultivate a rapid iteration culture, open source vs. closed source AI, "design engineer" as a title, and why he's bullish on Bitcoin. Such a clear thinker. We're honored to have him in the Village. (And great to be in partnership with our friends at GIC Chloe Breider and Chris Emanuel on this gathering!)

Proud to back Xinchen Wang and David Phizicky! Waypoint Bio is leveraging spatial biology to turbocharge pooled screening, allowing more efficient drug discovery! 🚀

View profile for Xinchen Wang, graphic

Co-founder and CEO at Waypoint Bio

Excited to share that Waypoint Bio has emerged from stealth to turbocharge drug discovery using *in vivo* spatial pooled screening tech with $14.5 million in financing, led by Hummingbird Ventures, with participation from other investors, including Recode Ventures and pre-seed lead Fifty Years. Pooled screening is an incredibly powerful technology for drug discovery, but it’s historically been limited to measuring simple cell phenotypes, such as growth or drug resistance. This limits the technology’s value in more complex diseases where interactions between cells and their environment are key, including T cell interactions with solid tumor cancers, such as pancreatic and gastric cancer. Our platform turbocharges traditional pooled screening by leveraging #spatialbiology to generate complex, multivariate and spatial readouts for every perturbation, and quickly generate novel drug candidates with a greater probability of clinical success. We will use the financing toward first designing CAR T-cell therapies with superior efficacy against the tumor microenvironment, and later, Treg therapies for autoimmune diseases, and advance them in partnership with biotech and pharma and on our own. Thanks to Ryan Cross for speaking with me and David Phizicky for Endpoints News about our platform, the first to combine pooled screening and spatial biology for drug discovery, and to our awesome investors for supporting our work to bring new therapies to the underserved! https://lnkd.in/eV_hc3Y9

A few weeks ago, I spent 3 days in Scotts Valley for the annual Village Global leadership retreat for founders. Here's why I thought it was one of the most high-functioning off-sites I've ever been a part of: A caveat was set at the beginning of the week to avoid the common pitfall of most founders at similar events, which was to be vulnerable instead of to posture. This is something that I'd guess won't be as talked about as a post-event highlight, but should be. Personally, I find this to be one of biggest issues with founder-focused events. All founders are struggling, regardless if you're a pre-seed or a Series B founder. The biological default, which we all fall victim to at some point, is to try to deflect on all the real, very painful things you're dealing with and only talk about all the things that are going right. But, I find reality is often the inverse of most founder talking points. Because the vulnerability caveat was set early and it was an off-the-record discussion all week, I had the most real conversations with founders I've ever had. I rarely come out of an event saying this. The quality of the guests and speakers was arguably the biggest highlight of the week. We heard from Diana on how to create positive self-talk as a founder and Lukas on some of the biggest things he's seeing with large enterprise deployments of AI. I also had the pleasure of attending a small breakout to learn from Mamoon on how to think about constructing a healthy fundraise. These are heavy-weights of the industry today and we got all of the content in small circles, curated and bundled, in a few days. It was an insanely well-planned week. The level of detail was extremely impressive. Flying 60+ (very particular) founders from around the country into a single location for 3 days is a planning nightmare. Shiela and the team had every hour, both on and off times, scheduled. The facility/food was incredible, meals were moderated within curated groups and there was an underlying focus on health/fitness throughout the week. We had access to cold-plunges, a great gym and organized hikes. Despite being away from our routines, we were able to still be locked in on the things we care about. Overall, Sheila and team crushed it. Very appreciative of Anne, Ben and the entire VG network. CC: Stu, Christopher, Diego, Luke, Jacob, Aman, Siamak, Aaron, Aaron, Françoise, Allie.

A big part of investing in yourself as a founder is strengthening the clarity of your strategy and the quality of your support network for the journey ahead. Over the course of our recent 3-day Villager retreat, we gained insights, we made friends, we cold plunged, and we left with more energy, more clarity, and of course, more Village swag ;)
