'2 4 : T H E N A N D N O W “Here’s a maid from sunny Baltimore. From the way she reads Latin we think they must speak it down there… She expects to enter U.V.M. next year. We know she’ll make good.” So reads the St. Johnsbury Academy yearbook entry for Edna Hall Brown, who spent a year at the preparatory school in Vermont’s “Northeast Kingdom” before enrolling at UVM in 1926. 💚 Brown, the first-known Black woman to graduate from UVM, did, indeed, make good. Millions of Americans experience symptoms of a mental health condition each year, and the number of people seeking care is trending upward. Thanks to the formative investments from the Vermont-based Four Pines Fund, suicide prevention research and training gains invaluable new resources with two recent UVM initiatives, aimed at youth suicide: 1. The Four Pines Fellowship, envisioned by Thomas Delaney, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics at The University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine, medical educator and mental health researcher, provides specialized training; 2. The VCCYF Zero Suicide Fund, led by Andrew Rosenfeld, MD, is aimed at improving child and adolescent psychiatry services statewide using the Zero Suicide framework. Together, these initiatives aim to not only prevent suicide deaths but prevent and reduce the tremendous suffering associated with suicidality and all its drivers.
